Hi all, I have been using Linux again after something like a six year break, I have been doing some serious work on it for university, writing documents in OpenOffice, writing some craplets and just generally getting familar with it again for my new job, the applications I will be working on run on Linux apparently. So I am killing two birds with one stone, and I gotta say Fedora Core 6 is sweet, I am having soooo much fun. The only thing that really bugs me is that on Fedora anything that isn't strictly GPL'ed is not included, so I have had to turn on ClearType fonts, mp3 playback and Flash player myself. No great big wow, but really a non trival task that the average induhvidual would never manage. This saddened me in a way, because I really feel that this would really stiffle the take up of linux, if a newbie user found that out of the box, it looked crap on an LCD, couldn't play music and couldn't look up "you tube". That newbie users is going to go off and pull down a cracked version of Windows XP on his P2P client of choice instead of figuring out Linux, which means everyone looses. However I had to say, I have installed all of that stuff and the Desktop Effects, I haven't booted into Windows XP for the last three days of pretty intense work. It christmas all over again ... -- modified at 19:39 Thursday 28th December, 2006

If you want a distribution that gives "proprietary" stuff out of the box, take a look at Linux Mint[^]. For professional work, my choice is CentOS[^] which is practically RHEL without the RH artwork, although at work we use OpenSUSE for development.

Just make sure you install WinXP first, then Fed6. I just burnt my fingers trying it the other way around.

I didn't say that Aero is useful. It isn't, BTW.

Nope, I had an 80 gig disk split in 3, I just deleted a partition, told Fedora to use the free space on the disk .... no problems at all.
