Impolite installers are one of my pet peeves. It really annoys me when installer decides that they should plaster my desktop with icons without asking, mess with file associations and decided to run on start up and put a cute icon in my taskbar every time I start (I'm looking at you Quicktime and Real Player).

Quicktime Alternative & RealPlayer Alternative are the first 2 apps I install on any new installation. Just the codecs, no extra crap.

I just installed the latest update for Java. While doing this I was browsing the net, reading some news and doing other stuff using the browser. At the end of the Java install the installer closed all my browsing windows - without asking - and reloaded the Java.com page so I could "test my install". So I lost the messages I was typing, the news I was reading, and my online work. Thanks Sun. X|

MS does the same thing. i lost a bit of work last week when Windows decided it needed to do an auto-reboot as part of an update.

Adobe auto update is anoying the hell out of me for the last wee while. It won't take no for an answer. You'd think saying no 100 times it would get the message.

Ahh, but it's strongly recommended that you close all applications and retire to a safe distance before proceeding with the install, so it's your own fault really, expecting to be able to use your computer whilst it performs a glorified unzip. Honestly.

The comments were about Real Player and not about the Real and Quicktime alt players :-) I've been using the alt players for 2+ years now without any problem. Note that, some spurious sites may be distributing spyware-enhanced versions - so you should not download it from some random website.

I'd bet you dollars to donuts that the first thing the installer said was "It is strongly recommended that you exit all programs before continuing with this installation." I guess they really meant it this time. ;P

good point. while kill all generally indicates a lazy/incompetent author/phb, when the installer asks for a specific app there's generally a reason for it.

Thanks Sun. X|

An idea has crossed my mind several times for a site called installerwatch.com or something like that, where people can submit info about what the installers for different programs do to your system, and what to watch for. You could get info about an installer before you ran it, and hopefully it would also put pressure on developers to do a better job of their installers.

Did you miss the "Close all applications before installing" message? That usually implies you don't open apps while installing either. Of course, the conclusion is probably based on a faulty premise: there was no "close all apps" message? Marc
