Any one shed any light, it keeps going from slow (quiet) to fast (noisy) for no particular reason I can fathom, its not like I'm doing any rocket science here

I had that problem with my older desktop which was an AMD. The fan itself was noisy. I had to go and buy a "super silent" one. Can't remember which one it was.

Replace it, they only cost around £4.

Could be dirt. Dust and grime eventually get into the works, thus the fan runs slightly slower in normal mode. This causes the heat to increase, until it trips the "fast" mode level. Careful vacuuming may help! Else, replace fan at earliest opportunity.

Yeah, the box has a variable speed fan system, I'm thinking it's not the fan itself, I've looked in task manager to check if anythings whacking the CPU, nothing jumps out at me

I have a similar box, you could try and circumnavigate the speed control (pull of the 2 wires on the speed dial or wire directly).

If it's an older box, it could be the power supply is crapping out. The more complicated they get with the energy saving schemes, the more tetchy they get.

Oooooh, you definitely need to buy a whole new system, and only the very bestest/newest will do.

Sounds like the the fan is dying. A slight wobble on the hub of the fan can slowly build into a big problem until the motor shaft doesn't always "catch" on the fan and when it does, it wobbles making horrible lound noises. Replace it.
