Too stupid to copy/paste
-
Hello, maybe this is a repost. :rose: As we all know, CP is a great place. It is such a great place that stupid people copy us again an again. Don't know how to write a cool article? No problem, you can copy/paste one from CP! I just came across another site whose authors managed to copy the articles' texts and images, but weren't able to get the code archives. Anyway, they are not too bad: Most articles contain a link to the author's CP profile. But then ... why couldn't they link to the CP article instead of copying it? Here it is: Marc Clifton writes for aivietnam.net?![^] Yes, just as James T. Johnson.[^] Oops, I did it myself![^] I'll never understand what benefits people expect from copying content such a sleazy way. Can somebody explain why this happens again and again? [EDIT] And another site: We all know this list...[^] It's not me, Babe![^] [/EDIT] Proud of being copied :-D coco

Ever read the book "How Technology Bites Back"? The author didn't have a clue, hahahaha! Marc

I found dozens of copies of my article translated into Chinese. I suppose they had a stronger reason than the lamers who simply copy-pasted articles, but it would have been nice had they asked me. Still, most of them even linked back to my original article. :)

That's not lounge material! ;P

The very same thought crossed my mind as well.

It's annoying but at least they don't change the author to claim it as their own. Not yet anyway ;)

It's flattery and all that. What I particulary like is the fact that they all use the original CP stylesheet - Orange headers anyone?
Deja View - the feeling that you've seen this post before.

Because you're smart, the articles you write contain a technically "cool" topic and people that start/run sites like this, want that kind of content.

Maybe they want to get one of those nifty letter's from CP's lawyer.

"Information should be free!" - said the cyberpunks who want you to acknowledge that the internal force or entelechy of information and knowledge makes it essentially incompatible with notions of proprietary software, copyrights, patents, subscription services, etc. Information is dynamic, ever-growing and evolving and cannot be contained within (any) ideological structure. Universities with their "Fair Use" doctrine (translation: we can reprint your complete body of work, charge a great deal of money to our students for access to it, and you'll never see a dime) further provide justification for theft.

Yes, information is free. The things I post on CP are meant to be used by everybody. The point that irritates me is that they put their copyright notice under my free article.
