But some are going there anyhow, and then are offended by this crazy notion of Free Speech.

Eh... The problem is, you exercise your free speech on your blog, but it's prompting your targets to exercise their free speech here. They don't need any encouragement. I'm sorry, but i really don't see how this helps anything - at best, you're taking people who have no shame or common sense, and giving them the exposure they so desperately crave; at worst, you're taking the metaphorical cans of worms from the other forums and scattering their contents behind you as you travel through here. Don't misunderstand - i understand the motivation. I joined this site over six years ago with the goal of answering questions as a way of giving back to the community that had helped me get on my feet as a new developer; now, i rarely answer questions at all because of the utter laziness and disrespect rampant on the programming forums. It's a real shame, and it's hard to think about it without wanting to fight back. But there is no arguing with one who lacks understanding, or chiding one who lacks shame. You only dishonor yourself in trying. Ignore the fools, vote them down, or band together like-minded users in some sort of ultra-secret vigilante group to "Report Message"-slam them off of the boards. But please, refrain from giving them further public exposure or any grounds to claim discrimination. Leave them to rot in the cesspool of their own creation and count yourself fortunate to be rid of them.

I agree with you on this whole heartedly Shog, but in Leckey's defense she wasn't the one that moved the battleground from there to here. I'm not blaming the thread starter for doing so, he just pointed it out.

It does feel frustrating. Last year, I attempted to be active in the forums but I gave up after a few months because, as you said, its incredible the lameness of some of these questions. So I moved on. For leckey, this is just venting off some steam on her home ground no less.

Totally, but dishonoring yourself is a tad harsh don't you think? I agree with you on the principle, but I can see the attraction.

So what? It's on leckey's blog, not here, and all you've managed to do is start another flame war in the Lounge. If you are really concerned about this (and personally I think you're right about leckey mis-reading the guy's post), then you should contact leckey directly. Marc Clifton also has his blog in his sig. Do you also vet his blog entries? Come on, guys, let's move on.

First, I've got to admit that I find this whole CP-offender list to be extremely juvenile, ridiculous and distasteful. And I find it difficult to contemplate the level of disturbing reasoning that must have driven leckey into creating and maintaining such a list. But this post is more about the presence of d@nish[^] on the list which I think is totally bizarre. He's only got a 100 odd posts and most of them are helpful posts in the programming forums. He's listed in leckey's list as : d@nish: Asked the dumb question of 'can I be first to post in the Lounge?' I found a thread that he started yesterday titled "First Post at Lounge" where he asked the following question : "Just out of curiosity, I would like to get to the very first post at the Lounge. Is it possible?" I am not sure why leckey thinks the question is dumb nor do I understand why she thinks he was asking if he could be the first to post in the Lounge. If I were d@nish, I would treat this as gratuitous character assassination. I think leckey should either remove d@nish from that list or at least add herself to the list (if she really wants to keep it fair).

                        Regards, Nish

and I would add stupid. It is stupid firstly because one of the key reasons for the success of CP is that the site rewards the behaviour that benefits the site, and ignores / discourages unhelpful behaviour. The self regulating forums are brilliant. By providing ANY recognition of bad behaviour (apart from simply ignoring it or marking particularly bad postings as abuse) will provide incentive to seek this recognition. It is stupid secondly because it achieves nothing. If someone really wants to behave in this way they are not going to be at all worried about a posting on some insignificant blog. It is stupid thirdly because if these folk really do upset Leckey, the worst she can do is to let them know about it. It is no different to training puppies (or in her case cats), rewarding bad behaviour with attention simply encourages more bad behaviour. Finally, it is stupid because she is making judgements of people on the most minimal of information and she may not be right. CP is all about tolerance and providing good advice. I know this may not sound very tolerant, but I hope it is good advice. [edit] and for the intolerant and a more variable quality of advice there is the Soapbox! [/edit]

This has been discussed, again and again and again and always we (the denizens of the CP lounge) have come to the conclusion that their method of rating is pure, untouched, unadulterated, genuine, verifiable, refined trash. MIM on TIOBE
