Why would you hate a book !

Recently we had a great discussion on why would you read a book !, if you missed that here[^] is the link This also begs another important question: Why would you hate a book ! Here are some of my reasons 1. Lack of cohesive organization and planning is annoying. 2. If the book is repetitive. 3. If the author mentions topics before they have been properly introduced, 5. When the layout of the book is beginners and it claims to be "professional" in the title. 6. If the book covers more than an overview of all the features, but provides very little "best practice" advice beyond the basics. 7. Book which teaches to to write an applications but won't necessarily teaches to do it well. 8. If the book is not properly researched 9. Approach of having multiple authors cover the same topics without enough editing to make it one cohesive piece. 10. If the book writing is complex or the author is prejudice So what's your reason ?

Hmm...Sounds like a book I read recently....MCPD self paced training kit...Complete waste of trees.

I'll put up a few points: 1. I cannot do an instant search. 2. Lack of portability - some books are just too heavy to carry around all the time. 3. It is losable! An ebook or a bookmark is not (unless you're dumb enough) 4. Lack of Ctrl+C & Ctrl+V - If there's a piece of interesting code that you want to try, you cannot copy and paste (obviously I'm expecting too much :-D)

The plot is trite and derivative, the characters are flat and one-dimensional, and the author was obviously trying to cash in on a trend. Oh wait, did you mean fiction?

They can be extremely expensive and/or overpriced. Usually the ones that are on university reading lists, so they charge poor students through the nose for them because lecturers claims they are "required". I never used a single book during my time, and laughed at people who actually paid around £50 per book, sometimes more.

I brought 2 books at uni. 1) Something about Databases. Brought for £45 3 days before the exam because I had neglected to show up to several of the lectures. Read cover to cover. aced the exam, took it back and swapped it for... 2) C++ Complete reference. Still use to this day when I occasionally dip back into C++.

Actually, there seems to be trend recently (particularly among technical books) to include an electronic copy with the book. Pro C# 2008 came with a link to download a PDF. Best of both worlds then.

Not me, at least not lately. I have never really read IT books at least in the sense that you typically read a work of fiction...cove to cover. I use the code examples in the book to teach me and only read the text to show me what I didn't understand about the code. If a book is weak on code sample, I don't buy it.

The more escapist the drivel, the better. I just finished reading Von Neumann's War[^] by John Ringo and Travis Taylor. It's been a very long time since I've purchased a technical book. I think the last one was the CSS Pocket Reference by Eric Meyer from O'Reilly. Except for basic references, most of them seem to be regurgitation of material more conveniently available online (like at CP).

If the pages were glued together. Or it was in Urdu, or Hindi, or Sanskrit, or German, or Russian, or it was Mein Kampf, or that really god-awfull book I read a few months back whose name, thankfully, entirly fails to lodge with any degree of permenancy in my brain.
