That's classic. It's probably their scripted way to have their support drones ask if your cable is plugged in without making the customer feel stupid. Unfortunately it only serves to make them look stupid.

So my internet at home is "down". but not really. I can play online games, but web sites do not load. in a tracert i have 75% time out. all ping commands time out. but at least i can play counterstrike i guess with a pretty good ping... so i call my ISP (Time Warner Cable/Road Runner) Suggestions from the Gal on the Phone: "push the standby button...then push it again" - TWC "you want me to turn the stand by mode on and off?" - Me "yes" - TWC "sir let's go ahead and switch the ethernet cord around. take the end in the computer and plug it into the modem and take the end from the modema and plug it in to the computer" - TWC "really?" - Me i started drinking about this point. "sir, is your firewall on? if it is, you might have to turn off your firewall to get to the internet" - TWC conversation ended. :( i called back and eventually got elevated in "request" level and a technician will be out tuesday afternoon.

Reminds me of the time I contacted tech support for Doom, because every client would freeze up whenever a fourth person joined the game. We could play 3 player just fine, but as soon as the fourth joined it would require everyone else to hard reboot. We were trying to play over a LAN, and the technician was adamant that our baud rates had to be set the same or it wouldn't work :doh: And then there was the time I contacted Comcast because something was up with their end of things. They told me to unplug my computer from the router, disable any firewalls and connect directly to the cable modem. You could hear the derision in the guys voice when I told him I wasn't comfortable doing that, and that he wouldn't be able to help me further if I wasn't willing to disable the firewall. I reminded him about Blaster and other worms, and he told me that nothing could infect my computer as I wouldn't be surfing the internet! So I lied and told him that everything was turned off just like he wanted, and when he still couldn't make it work, a technician was sent out to fix it. It turned out that a tree in the local area had fallen into the data lines and was causing all sorts of connection problems.

Sounds like a nameserver issue or other dns problem since you can play counterstrike it's probably using a direct IP address to connect. Try this in your web browser at home: http://69.10.233.10/[^]

Most of the time this is caused by a bad dns server on the ISP side but they will never admit that they have a problem on their end. However, I have seen this on my old XP desktop at work. I mean it would randomly not be able to do dns lookups (instant name failure). Restart the dns client and all was well again for a certain period of time (sometimes 30 minutes, sometimes 30 days...)

i have been having connection issues with DNS. so i thought i would mention this "it can take up to three days sir for your DNS to update so why don't you call us back if you are still having issues" - Time Warner Cable i have no idea what it is im going to say and/or do when/if the technician comes here...not sure what to do. :^)

Not being able to connect to *one* new domain's website is a dns updating issue, not being able to connect to *any* domains but being able to connect directly via IP address is a complete dns failure. Either you have a misconfigured DNS server address or their DNS server is down, simple as that if you can connect directly stating only an IP address.
