My client would like me to recommend a system that has 8 cores, which I guess would be configured as two processors with quad cores. So I ask the experts here. Why, you may ask? Because we're running very computational intensive analysis on some switch network topologies used in communication satellites. So the quality of your next TV show or Internet connection might depend on the analysis we're performing! mac

So your client is telling you what to recommend?

I don't know if this is relevant but I've been pretty happy with the Mac Pro I got a few months back. I've got it set up to triple boot between OS X, Windows XP, and Vista. But I'm not sure if that's really what you're looking for, or you want something like a rack based system.

Might it be easier to get an Opteron based system for that many cores?

Oh well that definitely makes it harder then. Since all such discussions will eventually mention it let me be the first, have you consider a cray?

OK, well then IMHO the Mac Pro is a good option, unless they are trying to be really cheap. Since the machine can hold up to 32Gb of RAM, you can install 64 bit windows to make better use of it, there's some info here: http://www.wintellect.com/CS/blogs/jrobbins/archive/2007/02/15/vista-x64-on-a-mac-pro-totally-awesome-dude.aspx[^]

Do they need physical cores? I used to run a dual proc xeon that had dual cores with hyper-threading and it flew.

AFAIK your only issue is actually installing windows. Once you've done that, it's no different than using windows anywhere else. I haven't had any problems with software running in windows on it. If he is going to be doing the installation of Windows, then there might be an issue. But I'll leave that up to you :)

Dual quadcores you say - how about something based around an Intel SkullTrail? edit: now how would this cause confusion? "dual" means "composed of 2 parts" as we all know. 2 * 4 = 8. It's not like I'm saying "core2 duo quad" or something nonsensical like that.

In a few years you can replace the current 8way box with a 64way one that's faster than a current 800way system that would cost far more than the buy now/upgrade later systems.

AFAIK your only issue is actually installing windows. Once you've done that, it's no different than using windows anywhere else. I haven't had any problems with software running in windows on it. If he is going to be doing the installation of Windows, then there might be an issue. But I'll leave that up to you :)

If it's just a matter of installing/configuring the box I believe the solution is called billable hours.

My client would like me to recommend a system that has 8 cores, which I guess would be configured as two processors with quad cores. So I ask the experts here. Why, you may ask? Because we're running very computational intensive analysis on some switch network topologies used in communication satellites. So the quality of your next TV show or Internet connection might depend on the analysis we're performing! mac

I've heard good things about BOXX machines. Lots of options - their APEX machines go up to 32 cores, I think. Haven't tried 'em myself though, but worth a look. Check 'em out here[^] Cheers, Drew.
