Oracle buys Sun

I am not so sure that I think this is a great idea. I think at first glance people will try to gravitate to what looks like the natural synergy of Oracle (a company heavily leveraged in Java) and SUN (a company that is also obviously heavily involved in Java) but there is a larger component here, the hardware parts, where I think Oracle may have issues. To me this is a clear case of a company getting outside their comfort zone. It can go very well or it can end poorly. I have seen it go both ways, and have been involved in at least one of them (Intel's move into the communications space). Look around and see if you can find any others in the market.. I bet you can. I understand the theory behind synergy and linked product diversification, and it is really hard to look forward in this industry and try to see all the possible outcomes just because the variables are so many, but I just get a bad feeling about this move. I also ask if people would think it was a good idea for Microsoft to buy a hardware company? Do you think that would be successful (keep any anti-ms bias out of it for now).

Best mice and keyboards I ever used were from Microsoft... And who makes the XBox? That works pretty well. Maybe a Microsoft Windows and Microsoft PC strategy could work. Simplify things (price would go up though.) But yeah. I don't see it going well for Sun and Oracle. It is better than IBM + Sun but that isn't saying much.

now that Oracle 10g express and M$SQL Express are free, why'd you need MySQL? MySQL ... function and triggers cannot be recursive temp table cannot be referenced more than once in same query open more than one conn per transaction is not permitted (distrib trans..) ... I thought MySQL is nice in beginning but now thinks its fading away

You have a good point here, but I think that a few of the people that have suffered through the last round of product defects may have a word here :)

I have always said that Windows would be much more stable if it was designed to run on a dedicated hardware environment, free from having to support all the other vendors stuff, but I am not sure if MS is the company to make that hardware.

Oracle has bought Sun[^]. Probably not so many of us here using Java but this has implications for those of us using MySQL. Seems a better fit than IBM buying Sun though.

It's not just Java's future that worries me - I hope Oracle will continue to support Virtual Box, which apart from the recent version 2.2.0 fiasco (buggy as hell), has otherwise been growing excellently. Mike

Because both express versions have several limitations. Example given: your databases can't be longer than 4GB.

yes sure, how about function cannot be recursive or no more than one conn can be opened within span of a transaction scope?

Isn't MySQL open source? I think they'll just have to let it go free. [like that'll happen!!]
Panic, Chaos, Destruction. My work here is done.
Open Source... But try out the license, many have fallen trying to figure out if they need to pay a fee or not. Imagine after Oracle gets done with it ;) Just because something is open source, does not mean it is free (just look at Community Server for that example) and it does not mean it will remain free. Licensing can bind your buns :)
