Anything is better than such a silly metric, but I don't know of anyone that has done a proper study.

Has CP not done a poll on it in the past? That would probably give you a better idea of what is being used the most.

A CP poll would be skewed by the kinds of people that come here. (Mostly .NET and C/C++ I would guess.)

Anybody got an idea about current programming language market shares? I found this index: http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/index.html[^], and it looks like C is still on no 2, and java on no 1, which surprised me (based on nothing ofcourse).

There is no such thing as programming language market share any more. It might have been true back in the day when everyone had to *buy* a programming language but no longer. There is almost no true "market" for programming languages in and of themselves. Personally I think it would be generally useful to have accurate stats showing languages used by *paid* programmers for completely *new* development. That would show you where the money is in being a programmer and not a maintenance guy or hobbyist.

The trick is generating that stat's hard. Datamining google searches or sourceforge activity is easy. At an absolute minimum you'd need to be a respected industry institution to be able to do broadly scoped survey of corporations to find out what they're doing.

I'm not sure how you would measure something like that. There are a lot of legacy apps out there that are written in C and languages such as !arg! COBOL. Even though the trend has been to move away from those languages in favor of the newer ones it will take a long time to catch up as many companies have the approach "If it ain't broke don't fix it". "respected industry institution" - surely an oxymoron, suggested alternative "relevant academic institution"

The ACM and IEEE both fit the respected industry institution label IMO.

In that article, they have considered JavaScript, even if Java is there, that is wrong. If you want to consider JavaScript then consider HTML also, and It will be at Top for sure... :)

HTML isn't a programming language but layout language.

So you mean CP is most objective source for programming language usage research?
