MS Auto Updates - Problem?

Is there a recent problem with MS Updates working? Suddenly, (over the past few weeks) both auto and manual updates are slow or non-existent. I've heard everything from Vista SP volume to Registry problems trying to expain it away. Anyone have some insight?

:laugh: Your're right. Maybe I should consider myself fortunate that I can't auto update from MS. :)

I haven't had any problems except a system at work where IT has decided to implement an update server so they can "test each update" (I think they're idiots.)

Not necesarily - the MS auto update to IE8 is a good example of an automatic update that can screw your system good and proper. If you can, it makes some sense to pretest updates, particularly if you have a company wide base system.

I seem to recall a Symantec update that crashed half of China :laugh: And we think MS has problems, can you imagine working for Symantec X| .

Actually, I used to dream of working at Symantec. This way, I could obliterate their code base, professionally kill all the idiots that abound over there. Of course, I have to think of an escape plan, but I'm banking on them being too stupid to require an elaborate one...

I was wandering through my c:\program files folder a few weeks ago and came across a Symantec folder, nuked it instantly, rebooted and check the hard drive. I then went and washed my hands. I have no idea where it came from, don't care just got it of the drive. It it possible to disinfect or wash parts of the hard disk, I don't want it to upset any of the neighboring files, I hate to think they had to live next to a Symantec.

Didn't they have a fairly reasonable C compiler/development system back then as well? I never used it, but I think I remember it getting reasonable reviews in magazines.

I have no problem screening patches for servers, but the notion that most IT departments are qualified (or even have the time) to fully test patches is ludicrous. If they said that they were just going to delay the patches a week and check for reports, I'd understand that. But the testing thing is all about control and nothing more. IE8 didn't screw up my system--for every system I've installed it on (four) it went very smoothly.
