Another victim of the economy

It looks like I will be on the next unemployment statistic for the US. Just as quick question, does anyone have any great ideas on the job search in this market (Or lack of market) and what is the best way to go about it? I am in the east valley of Phoenix, AZ which was booming with jobs two years ago but seems to be as dried up as the weather today. Any advice would be better than no advice. :sigh:

Look to see who has a job that is perfect for you. Talk to people in those positions. Make friends with someone in HR there. Use seduction if needed. Or offer to fix their computer. Make one disappear and apply for that job. Have your HR friend tell you who the other candidates are. Make them not want the job. Popular methods involve kneecaps and baseball bats with stern warnings, car trunks and trips through Death Valley, or explaining what happened to the last person with that job. Have friend in HR help you get job. If you still don't get the job. Make that one vanish. Have the HR friend start a rumor that the position is cursed, like being the teacher of Defense Against the Dark Arts. If you still can't get the job, find some big shot in the company, fix their computer or use seduction. That or call around and see what people do have and try to be the best candidate. But that's no fun. Other posibilities are having a wife that knows a guy looking for interns which require no real interview process, and he owes her a favor.

They all sound like great ideas and I will try them. Except for the one about trying to be the best candidate for the job, doesn't sound as intersting as the others.

Things have improved out here somewhat since I got laid off last January, but it's still primarily that Web crap and companies who think that's what they need. If you do that Web crap you can probably get something very quickly. It also depends on how far east you are. I'm beyond Apache Junction, and some companies may choose to hire someone closer in to town. In my case, age may also be a silent factor.

don't know what it's like where you are, but where i am (Raleigh, NC), it's the worst i've seen in the whole 12 years i've lived here. get ready for a whole bunch of really tough technical screens and a ton of competition.

Funnily enough my company will not hire anyone under 30 to a senior position. They want people who have kids, families mortgages etc as they tend to be more committed and take less time off. Result? Productive staff that need less supervision. Save money all round!

I also have the age thing going on and I am way south of AJ, more like the Queen Creek area.

Similar experience here. They wanted someone 'stable', i.e. less likely to bugger off in 6 months after doing bugger all.

Hey, the last one worked for me... Of course I am stuck in QA and phone support hell... Being an intern can have it's drawbacks. Good news is I have to take 40 hours of unpaid furlough.

Did you eventually find a job you like in Raleigh?

I wish you luck. I would hate to look for a job right now as I do not interview or test well. Interviews I can do until the first question I cannot answer then its down hill fast. I being 54 have a strike against me walking in the door. Look into the local job agencies, Monster and Dice. There are a couple of others that I do not remember. Also I heard just last week that LinkedIn is a source managers use. Again Good Luck, djj
