    I was using this XenoCode PostBuild obfuscator product, having bought a license for $1599... and they went bust overnight, and did not even care to tell. I went to their site to post a support question to see if they will support .NET 4, and there you go! Nothing in that site. It just directs me to some silly tools portal site, which has nothing to do with obfuscator tools. I also have a SmartAssembly license... and checked that site, and saw that it was taken over by Redgate :-) I tried to ask for an upgrade in their site having gone into the smartassembly upgrade centre link, and typed in my existing retail license, and Boom, it just says my license is invalid and the format is unrecognised. I bought this retail license just 7 months back from the orignal company which wrote the product. God! some of these 3-rd party companies, just get on my nerves!!!!!!!!

      hmm wonder what happens to the software now. I gave xenocode postbuild a try once and it seemed pretty good. The price tag was far too high for my needs though so I went with a freeware alternative.

        If they went bust then usually one of two things have happened: 1. The receivers walk in the door tell everyone to stop working and have the management escorted from the building. They then set about trying to sell what's left of the company in order to pay off (some of) the debts. 2. The management keep going hoping they can salvage the business until all their creditors, including the power and telecoms suppliers, pull the plug and they grind to a speedy halt. In either case you will generally find that sending email messages to their customers is fairly low on the list of priorities. Yes I know it hurts (been there myself) but that's the world of business.

          So far, there have been recent patches. When you start the application it indicates your current build and if a new build is available. When I purchased the product 3-4 years ago there was a different pricing structure and it wasn't rolled up into the one virtual product. However, in the recent years they have dropped the individual product. New users had a to purchase the entire package which was more money. I have not had any issues with Postbuild. However, it looks like they have found more success or potential in the virtualization side and are not spending as much focus on just the Postbuild product. I am still using the 2009 version and they have a 2010 version available for me to upgrade. However the cost for my license upgrade is $399 and I am unsure if I want to throw any more money to a product that i am not sure of the future development/maintenance. Maybe someone from Xenocode might see the post and chime in. [Edit] I submitted a help ticket from my Xenocode account asking someone to review this thread and provide feedback. [/Edit]

              Stuff 'em! :laugh: They are probably fine, good people. But the management seem to always spin it out until there is no money for creditors. Strangely, this seems to make other companies vulnerable to going bust, and thus more work for receivers... I'm sure that's just coincidence though! And when this happened to us (years ago, major customer went bust and we had to follow) we couldn't get a receiver to do anything. Again, I'm sure it was just a coincidence that we had no money they could use...

                  For really expensive software from not-so-large companies, one of my clients insists on an escrow arrangement, where the source code gets put in escrow by a 3rd party, and is subject to being released to the client on certain conditions (like the vendor going down the tubes).

                    Actually, his comment wasn't rubbish, it was extremely pertinent. i.e. What encouragement is there to pay for licenses, if companies can just go bust (taking your money and agreement with them) overnight? So what happened you is indeed "an other reason for piracy", or an excuse that people could give for it. That you didn't understand what he wrote says more about you than about him, and the fact that you one-voted someone because you were incapable of understanding his rational and logical argument tells even more about you.

                      Now that is a clever idea. I imagine it would be expensive to setup, butt for absolutely critical software, totally worth it.
