To Java or not to Java

Does the avg. user need Java installed? I'm sure a few niche websites using applets might crash and burn but for the majority of users WTF is Java even used for anymore? The stupid thing seems to update every week.

No. If you not develop on Java you don’t need their virtual machine installed. The most web app using Java and JSP are used in the intranet corporate networks. AFAIK nobody uses applets or Java swing anymore.

Martin County Florida Clerk of Court's website requires it. I don't mind. Very useful site.

Yeah it's really invasive, the .net framework never seems invasive at all by comparison. I avoid the java runtime now like the plague.
