http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110228/ap_on_re_us/us_growing_fuel[^] They're using bacteria instead of squishing algae. The real test will be the demonstration facility they're going to build according to the article. It sounds like it would be emissions neutral since facilities would be capturing the carbon you'd be releasing from fuel made by these plants. We shall see though.

That's called seagull management (or sometimes pigeon management)... Fly in, flap your arms and squawk a lot, crap all over everything and fly out again... by _Damian S_

The scale doesn't sound too optimistic. At 15000 Gal/Acre/yr it will take more than 3 million acres (4700 Sq. Miles) to satisfy current US annual demand for diesel fuel (diesel only, no gasoline or jet fuel included). NIMBY and capital costs will kill this because of the land/surface requirements.

3 million Acres need not be on a plain surface, this is bacteria, they can grow anywhere. Some form of alveoli like structures could put the required acreage into one large factory.

It's a cyanobacterium which depends on photosynthesis to make the fuel, so it at least must have sunlight exposure. It won't work very well inside a factory, or in an aveoli like structure where most of the surface is not exposed to the outside (and hence sunlight).

It can still be grown vertically. And use an outdoors facility in a high sunshine area.

4700 square miles is just 5% of the State of Arizona. Plenty of sunshine, plenty of desert with no vegetation / animal life.
