Not fully accurate. H-1B is a dual-intent Visa, unlike say the TN or B1 Visas. So an H-1B visa holder can file for permanent residency.

I sit corrected. It was my understanding that the H-1B program was specifically for people on non-immigration tracks, and that those seeking permanent residence were given other types of work permits.

If i was in your position - i would not think for moving to US for now at least - immediately after brutal murder of CEO of Al-queda. Let the fire get cool down a bit and then move to States - but Russian girls are so pretty - why do you want to leave them and move to US :wtf: ?

osama bin laden died recently - do i need to say anymore ? His followers are in preparation for major attacks. So Russia seams to be safer than States at the moment unless you live in some small not popular city in States. Anyway all the best!

In fact, terrorist attacks happen much more often in Russia.

Yes, it is rather confusing. H-1B does fall under non-immigrant category, but it does not require the applicant to prove intent to leave. Once your Green Card process is underway, and your H-1B has expired, if you've crossed a certain stage in the GC process, you can get an EAD (which is a little better than the H-1B since it lets you switch employers). Trouble with an EAD obtained that way is that it's annual - so you need to renew it every year. And if you ever travel out of the States, you need something called an Advanced Parole to re-enter. Sometimes at airports and other ports of entry, people with EAD/AP have a toughter time than those with stamped Visas. So there are pros and cons.

          Regards, Nish

Have you actually been paying attention for the last decade or so? Most of Osama's planned attacks on US soil failed; the Chechens have been successfully attacking Russia regularly. :sigh:

I don't think that's going to be easy, especially since there are many good software engineers with lots more experience available locally. For a company to petition the government to grant you a work permit, you'd need to have exceptional skills that aren't readily available in the US. If you'd like to experience working and living in the US, your best bet may be to seek work with a consulting company that may relocate you to the US for a specific project for a short period of time.  Even then, the chances of landing a project in the US depends entirely on the company's clients, their needs, and your relationship with them. /ravi
