$100 for a Taxi!?

So I'm in the process of planning my vacation to Disney World, and I need transportation between a the airport, a hotel, Disney World, and the Greyhound bus station (Disney World is just the start of the trip). 2-4 taxi rides (depending on if I feel like walking from/to the hotel) that total perhaps 40 miles. Using an online estimator I came across, it will cost over $100 just for the taxi. :wtf: I'm about to look into local transit (e.g., bus / subway), but do any of you have a better idea for how to get around more cheaply in Orlando (sadly, walking 40 miles is not an option)?

Seems a pretty reasonable price for a cab... My house is 42km (around 26 miles) from the city centre here, and a cab home costs me about $120 AUD (around $130 USD).

When we went to Orlando last year, we hired a car for the full 17 days. worked out at around $60 per day. That was for a 4x4 Jeep, it would have been alot cheaper for a smaller car. I just had a look for an economy 4Dr and the quote for 7 days hire came back at $32 per day. Having the car means you can go anywhere anytime you want, and fuel is cheap. Worth looking into.

I considered renting a car, but then I realized I'd have to drop it off at the same location (airport) and would have to take a taxi to the Greyound station ($40-$50). There might be the possibility of dropping it off near the Greyhound station and then getting a taxi, but the price comes out to be around the same, but with more hassle.

Not to mention I don't think they offer rides to the Greyhound station (just to/from the airport).

An extra $70 a night saves you $200 a day in cabs, and that's not cheaper ? I do believe they run a courtesy bus to the airport, but I'm not sure about the Greyhound station.

Sounds cheap to me; even in Bullhead City, cabs cost $1.80 - $2.00 a mile. But there's a bus that runs between here and Las Vegas (100 miles) several times a day that costs $25 each way. Look into something similar in Orlando, especially between Disneyworld and the hotel, and the airport and hotel. Hotels often offer such services for free, or a very discounted rate for guests.

Most hotels I've ever stayed at in a big city have a shuttle to/from airports and other transportation stations. Some of them are free, some cost a minimal amount. Easiest way to find out about it is to call or email the hotel and ask. Some airlines offer a shuttle service which can be a rip-off. Last time I was in Vegas, for instance, some friends bought the airline shuttle ticket ($20 each), my wife and I grabbed a cab for $15 including tip. We got there quicker too. There's got to be a shuttle from your hotel to Disney World. I'd be really surprised if there isn't. Just call and ask. They might even get you to the Greyhound station too. The outlaying hotels don't stand a chance if their guests can't get to the big attractions. If you're considering renting a car, don't rent from the airport. The premium for renting there is astronomical. There'll usually be some rental places within a few miles of the airport. Catch a cab to the rental place and save yourself a lot of money. I did exactly that last summer. Left the family at the airport, grabbed a cab and was back with the rental to pick them up within 45 minutes. For a 5 day rental I saved about $150 over renting directly from the airport. Dropping the SUV off at the airport didn't incur any extra costs, so I only had to take the cab once. Cheers, Drew.

I will be taking a 16-day vacation up the East coast, so I am trying to save where I can. No Disney World hot dogs for me (I will just eat the popcorn people have dropped).

Great information, thanks! The hotel is am considering ($40/night) has a shuttle to Disney World, but it makes no mention of the airport. I'll have to call tomorrow during business hours to find out.

ROTFL. We bought tickets that gave us vouchers for meals, and saved a bit of money on what it would cost otherwise. It was part of the fun to try all the restaurants, the one in Epcot with the wall of fish was best, IMO.

If I could just decipher the bus schedule and ensure it is running late enough for me, I'd use that (hundreds of people sharing the cost drops the price to $5 for a day pass).
