The XBOX Youtube app buffers well (unlike my TV's Youtube app) and I'd like to avoid hooking up a laptop to my TV so I can watch Youtube on my TV.

I really only use the Netflix app, and this was before the newest update that made it an app. I can't stand the new interface for Netflix that came with the latest dashboard update. I want the old one back. The wife uses Hulu on there as well, but those are the only apps we use.

Anyone else think this is a rotten idea? You cannot run Youtube/Netflix or any other app on an XBOX unless you maintain a Live Gold subscription. Remember than these apps are free and run on numerous other devices including PS3, most recent Samsung and Sony TVs and DVD players, phones and tablets etc. :thumbsdown:

With XBox doing so well for an old console and it's still collecting money from users means that Microsoft has got to be doing something right. For asking users to pay for these types of apps (even though they are free) they can continually update its product because it has the funds to do so. XBox has gone through so many changes in the product's life time so far and upgraded/new content. With all due respect but how many times has PS3 and others have gone through many radical updates to please their customers? By the way I don't know much about PS3 or other said devices so by all means correct me if I have said anything in error. :) My 2 cents.

I really only use the Netflix app, and this was before the newest update that made it an app. I can't stand the new interface for Netflix that came with the latest dashboard update. I want the old one back. The wife uses Hulu on there as well, but those are the only apps we use.
I agree! I don't like the new Netflix look.

I get what you are saying. I was shocked at first back when I got my XBox. But I have to admit the gold subscription is for all the network related content is hard to say no to. Playing games with friends or watching some YouTube/Netflix/Hulu (whatever you're subscribed to) videos is pretty cool.

you are looking at it all wrong see... the xbox is first and foremost a gaming console. you get the live gold to play online games which is a lot more fun that just local solo stuff.. then they offer the other stuff as a bonus . netflix youtube etcc..They are still exploring and playig with how far they can go with the extra stuff without losing track of the original purpose.. a gaming console.(that being said I wish they would add a damn web browser) so if you bought the xbox and the live gold for its intended purpose its not a problem,you can do other stuff too. if you got it JUST for the apps, you missed the mark, a dedicated pc(hooked to the tv) is better for it probably and would have far greater flexibility(things such as other streaming sites).
Let's face it, after Monday and Tuesday, even the calendar says WTF! Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.

Well there are lots of Kinect games you can play without Live Gold. So Live Gold is not an absolute requirement here.

I've wondered about this aspect of their strategy for a while. They want to be the center of entertainment for the house, from TV to movies to music to, oh yeah, video games. I don't mind paying for Xbox live, it is a great service for doing online play (I know you can do it without paying on other platforms, but XBL really is a smooth experience). I think they're making a HUGE mistake by requiring it for all the other crap though, that's free on just about every other box you can connect to your TV.

Well I am rather pro-Microsoft for most things, yet this pissed me off when I first found out. I can imagine that neutral folks would be really upset to find out this limitation after they've made the purchase.

I especially like how they inform you that you need a Gold subscription after you've downloaded the app. Maybe I missed something, but it would have been nice to have been told that before downloading the app onto the HD since it's useless to me without the subscription.
