Lounge Lurker

Well, I'm attempting to move past my admitted 'Lounge Lurker' status. I'll attempt to help with the VB.Net questions. I have some experience with that sort of thing and was a "Master" on Experts-Exchange before deciding that I didn't like them too much anymore, so I've been looking for a new home. Wish me luck, and do you have any advice?

Good luck. As far as advice:
- Pretend what you are going to do has been done 1,000 times before. That will help you regulate your ego so you don't clutter answers.
- Don't post non-answers as answers. Saying "why didn't you Google this?" is not an answer, for example. Post a comment if it is something constructive, but not an answer.
- You will run into people who imply your answer is lacking (I'm not naming any names here), but you notice their comments lack real substance or relevance. Try not to let them get on your nerves.
- You will get downvoted for no apparent reason or for stupid reasons. Don't let it get to you.
- You may find that you can answer VB.Net questions in the Visual Basic forum, the ASP.Net forum, the Windows Forms forum, the WPF forum, the .Net Framework forum, and Quick Answers. Experiment and see which you prefer to answer in.
- There are other ways to help others with VB.Net. For example, you can suggest to authors how they can improve their VB.Net articles/tips/tricks. You can also edit questions/answers, and report spam/absusive questions/answers.

See #1 here. And keep in mind that search results change over time. A LMGTFY answer with just a link may become obsolete in the future, reducing the value of Code Project over time.

Some of No.6 requires a certain level of rep. No doubt that will be earned but it it is not there yet!

The best advice... which you've already gotten... is to not take things personally. Don't forget that you're online and generally people tend to be more crude from behind a computer screen. If you keep on helping, eventually the thanks you sometimes get will be good enough to offset the occasional negativity. Try to have fun doing it, it is after all... on your own time that you're doing this so you might as well get a kick out of it. Good luck and welcome! :)

LOL.. I wanted to switch my gender BACK! (j/k) Mainly I thought the cost out-weighed the benefit. I had to keep grinding away at answering questions just to keep my membership, but when it came to finding answers I found that CodeProject and StackOverflow were actually much more valuable. Another problem was that the users at EE tend to have even MORE sense of entitlement since they are usually paying for service. So they were paying, but then when it came to me reaping benefits from my hard work, it never panned out. For example (besides the information aspect), EE would promise me t-shirts and mugs, so I would register with my address for them to be sent, but the rewards would never be sent. I did eventually ask what happened, but it wasn't a main concern so I just suggested that they keep their promises. Eventually, I figured that if I was going to do it completely for free that I might as well pick a more enjoyable, and less competitive environment. Its not that the competition bothered me much, I just thought it would be easier to 'bond' with my colleagues if I were in a more laid back environment. I love helping with Q&A since it provides some excellent learning opportunities that I may find otherwise. Anyway, that's the long and the short of it. Thanks for asking, it actually feels good to tell someone about it.

My advice over that already offered is to pick your questions. Don't try to answer everything, and don't beat your head against the wall of stupidity so often that it puts you off answering the intelligent questions. I'd also disagree with one of the points, posting a search engine link can be entirely appropriate if it's a really lazy question and you can turn up answers just by googling the title. These people need to learn about how to use the resources at their disposal, and search engines aren't going to go away or lose relevance when it comes to technical questions (and in fact the search will update with new material when it's available, unlike fixed links in a CP answer).

Stay away from the lounge otherwise you'll never get anything done ever again.
