I hope you're not calling me stupid, since my knowledge of that newspaper is minimal.

So, "under-educated" people are stupid ? :~ Nothing personal there, just taking the opportunity I see the adjective stupid a lot in these days in the forums. I'm affraid it could be the expression of a complex of superiority over other workers, particularly manual workers. Too many believe diplomas make intelligence.

 No, quite the opposite We're talking about the kind of newspaper that'd happily print "Elvis is alive and works in Wal-Mart" stories, and, sadly, there are plenty of people out there who'd read it and believe it must be true because it's in a newspaper -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

I really like this sentence: the base, the indisputable thruth, the stone on which the house will be built  Another one I like in the same area, from Descartes competitor, Blaise Pascal: Man is no more than a reed, the weakest in nature. But he is a thinking reed

Yeah, I hate it when people of higher education call manual laborers stupid because they are not of the same education level. When I call somebody stupid, I am usually referring to either their maturity level (which is really a slang use of stupid) or lack of common sense. Just because you have a college degree doesn't mean you're not stupid (hence the term educated idiot). Colin Davies wrote: In English the words "Stupid" and "Silly" are used quite often and have no analogy to intelligence. However, these words are defining a relation of inequality by lowering the stupid/silly "subject", aren't they? Colin Davies wrote: As with a lot in English you must read it in the context and response that it is in, rather than word for word. Like any other language, isn't it? ;) As I said to Mr benjymous, I took the opportunity to express myself on this point rather than making a specific comment on his message.
