Am I the only one who sees the irony in the fact that this is being reported by PBS and NPR? For those of you on other continents or in countries other than the USA (you too Ed), PBS is the Public Broadcasting System, NPR stands for National Public Radio. NPR is a fairly nasty thorn in the side of conservatives. The reason is that PBS/NPR is a fairly liberal organization, which in and of itself is not "bad" - the thorn comes from the fact that NPR recieves public funding, read that as saying, "my taxes help pay for it even though I don't agree with the opinions they espouse". For this to be available from the NPR site means they find it overwhelmingly credible. But Jason, no matter what the facts are - "this business of anger directed at terrorists just doesn't feel right." Mike

"my taxes help pay for it even though I don't agree with the opinions they espouse" Hmmm. I could say that about Bush's massive defense spending and war on Iraq. NPR's entire budget is less than the cost of a single Blackhawk. (BTW, the way they keep crashing, there won't be enough of 'em left to fight the war.) Editor's Note: Although U.S. officials acknowledge terrorists were trained at Salman Pak, they say it is unlikely that these activities were related to the Sept. 11 attacks. It should also be noted that the two defectors interviewed for this report have been brought to FRONTLINE's attention by members of the Iraqi National Congress (INC), a dissident organization seeking to overthrow Saddam Hussein. Well, I do take defense seriously. I'm of the Pat Buchanan school of thought, though. Bring our troops home, kick the H1B visaholders out, build a missle defense system, and be like a porcupine: Don't mess with anybody but have a hellacious defense system ready if someone messes with us. Thank God, we have men and women in this country who have, and are willing to, sacrifice their lives for Ed and people like him I don't remember you being in my unit back when I served 3 years of US Army followed by 3 years of National Guard, Jason. well, ed beat me to it. but, no a picture isn't proof. and, remember, remote intel is not perfect (chinese embassy, aspirin factory). if we could get some more people to corraborate his story, i'd be convinced. -c

The guy defected and told us about a training camp where people are trained to hijack planes using an old plane. He tells us the location and we point a satellite at it. Viola! There's a plane there. Sounds like his story is corraborated.

no, it isn't. corraboration would be a 2nd person independently giving the same story. i could claim that there's a guy down the street from me training terrorists to make bombs out of Triumph Spitfires. a satellite photo of the car lot wouldn't prove anything but that i knew where to find a vintage car dealer. -c

interesting, but sadly: "American officials confirmed that they had met with the former lieutenant general in Turkey but said they had not learned all that much from him. They said it was unlikely that the training on the fuselage was linked to the Sept. 11 hijackings in the US." that's what i want: a clear Saddam -> 9/11 link. until then, Saudi Arabia will stay higher on my list of countries we should invande. -c
