Sound of the Week
-
Kauan - Fohn[^] This is the second time Kauan makes it to the SOTW. Back in 2021 I posted a song from their latest full length album. This song was released just last week and so the first SOTW from 2023 features a song from 2023. Let's hope a new full length is following :D Kauan is a Russian post-rock band with a Finnish name (meaning long, ages ago) and mostly Finnish lyrics. It reminds a bit of Sólstafir and maybe even Sigur Rós and if you told me they were from Iceland I'd believe it.

It's the sort of thing I play when I'm in self indulgent guitar mode
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!" - Hunter S Thompson - RIP

 ... Indeed Sólstafir rings the bell, and, by coincidence the intro and outro of the latest LOVEBITES fits well with Kauan track :-) [LOVEBITES / Judgement Day [MUSIC VIDEO] - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3uGjp-P7DI) Up to now, power metal was not my cup of tea, but this is far above and beyond anything I heard in power metal. At first hearing I was a bit in shock actually ... :-) btw Happy New Year 2023!!!

This song has been on repeat quite a few times: [Sara Bareilles - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAti8JNmJi8) For something a little more energetic (but not necessarily as good): [EXCISION | Opening For The Evolution Tour 2020](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adxGcJfbfVc) And some background music: [Astrix @ Boom Festival 2022](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HS4c4a8OCj4)

Never been into power metal, I can stand one or two tracks from time to time. This is good stuff, but it didn't change anything for me. Back in the day I used to listen to Rhapsody (of Fire) - Holy Thunderforce[^] It even had a spot in my regular playlist :)

That is good, that is an awesome opening, and Astrix is something else! Man, I should really listen to Astrix more often :omg:

Me neither :-) ... and with any "other" power metal I stop listening after 20 seconds, in most cases ... euugh (or yawn ... :-) ), and yet ... these LOVEBITES play with intensity of Shadow of Intent, with extreme vocals and extreme guitar solo's, sparks are flying around, that's why I found them more then worth to mention now :-) we can see it as an exception ... Cheers,

I found this (new-ish) song you might like: THRESHOLD - King Of Nothing (OFFICIAL LYRIC VIDEO) - YouTube[^] Got enthusiastic about the intro, but then the guy opened his mouth and... X| Great singer, just not in my metal!

Could be ... my impression is also that this track without singing is close to awesome :-) 5/5, and also the visuals are close to 5/5. I knew Threshold in the past I think they evolved musically from prog into heavier sound, which is good, but singing tackles them a bit ... :-). I will give them another try in the coming days, thanks for pointing out this one
