I have discovered the same thing. In a test application that I created the results were REALLY unbelievable. The thing that I did was: 1. Connect to SQL Server 2. Use Northwind as Initial Catalog 3. Filled the dataset with Customers table records After using DataTable.Rows.Find("MORGK"), the time taken was 40 milliseconds After using DataTable.DefaultView.Find("MORGK"), the time taken was 0(?) :wtf: milliseconds but the record index was correctly found and the return value was 51. After using DataView.RowFilter the time taken was 70 milliseconds. And then, going through the documentation, DataTable.Rows.Find() uses PrimaryKey to locate the record. There was nothing like this for RowFilter so my assumption is that DataView uses an approach like Table Scan which means that PrimaryKey is completely ignored. Also, DataView constantly monitors for new rows and if it matches the criteria it is automatically available in the DataView. I guess this could be a sort of explanation. Husein

Everything I've read says the same thing, but I've never seen it quantified. A solution that gives you some flexibility might be to use the ADO.NET interfaces rather than the concrete classes. Use a factory class to create your connections, data readers, data adapters, etc. and then in your data layer use the interface types, rather than the concrete types to work with the objects. To change to one of the other 'families' of classes, you only need to change the factory. You can have a factory for SQL Server and one for Oracle (with .NET 1.1). You could even instantiate the factory dynamically at runtime though you'll need a common base class or interface for your factories. Here is some psuedo-code: class SQLServerDataObjectFactory : DataObjectFactory {     public IDbConnection CreateConnection(...)     {         return new SqlConnection(...);     } } class OracleDataObjectFactory : DataObjectFactory {     public IDbConnection CreateConnection(...)     {         // The class name may be wrong - I don't have the .NET 1.1 framework installed         return new OracleConnection(...);     } } class MyDataLayerObject {     public void MyDataLayerMethod()     {         // Do stuff         // The data object factory was instantiated somewhere in the         // program's initialisation code.         IDbConnection connection = myDataObjectFactory.CreateConnection(...);         // Do stuff with connection. The syntax for calling your templatized operator is as convoluted as it can get: m.template operator[]<int>("str"); Unfortunately, VC++ 6.0sp5 does not swallow this (don't know for other MS compilers). If you ever think of doing something like localisation, resources are the way to go (probably even a resource DLL). But if you are happy with one (or maybe very few, with different binaries) languages, you can probably stay with const strings in your application. Both are Unicode-ready, but when you choose english as your applications language, you will probably not need this.
