recommendation for dev systemThe Sempron is the new Duron (ie: the lower-end AMD processor). Go for the Athlon64, Socket939. I use 1G, which is very nice as AutoCAD is a memory hog. No need for 2 drives, but "more is better", and SATA is nice, but you don't *need* it. I wish I could get a new system like that for 440euros. Source code controlPerforce is my favorite, but I'm thinking of trying out Vault sometime. I used to Perforce and can list dozens of reason why I prefer it to VSS. VSS is evil. We use it at work for ~20 devs, which is way too many. The kindest thing you can do for a stupid person, and for the gene pool, is to let him expire of his own dumb choices. A customer is driving me crazy! If your eyesight is so bad that you cant use a program that needs a minimum requirement of 800x600, then maybe you shouldn't be using the software, eh?? The software was designed for 800x600 and you dont meet the minimum requirements, so you cant use it. Dont expect the software to change because you dont meet it's specifications. (generic "you" of course) The kindest thing you can do for a stupid person, and for the gene pool, is to let him expire of his own dumb choices. Multiple monitorsI use a dual-hard video card, with the VGA-DVI adapter for the second monitor. Since my budget is tight, I have monitors are different sizes, which may sound weird, but it's not too bad. But I found that the prime monitor (ie: the larger one) should be placed physically on the right side. This is because most games you play will resize the monitor resolution (to play the intro movie let's say), which causes there to be "primary desktop spill-over" onto the second, smaller, on-the-left monitor. And *definitely* use UltraMon. I love the ability to drag a window from one monitor to the other, and the extended taskbar is handy. HL2 hardware tip [no spoilers]I looked into getting the CE, but my DVD drive is acting up, and wont read DVDs, so just the normal edition for me. :( I would love to play HL1:Source too, just to see how the oldie looks now. Old code challenge - Today's longest function1170 lines. I think it nests down to 4 ifs and a switch, so there are a lot of cases to handle. Why?!I'm all for cutting out Vivendi, but I *do* like shiny new cds to keep HL2 on, instead of my 50cents/cds that I use, so it's store-bought HL2 for me! Media Player 10Had the same problem: played the first 2 seconds of the file, then the video froze, and clicking anywhere did nothing, then then after 20 seconds, it became responsive again. Half Life 2 Collector's EditionMy DVD drive is all wonky and won't read DVDs anymore, and yet, CDs are fine. US Election overProbably because people felt that this time their vote is more important, due to the closeness of the race. And Nader isn't going to win. It's just that simple.
