  • Windows Mobile Phone question
    B Bamaco2

I need a mobile phone platform to communicate with a SIM card by exchanging APDU commands and responses with it (ISO 7816-4) I know how to do it on Windows desktop platforms, but I could not locate any documentation on the subject from the Windows Phone Development website. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff402535(v=vs.92).aspx[^] Is this possible on Windows Mobile Phone, and can someone point me to some documentation on the subject?

  • Star Trek, from a non-trekkie.
    B Bamaco2

I watch all the reruns (from Canada!) of Enterprise. I have viewed again and again TOS (the original series) and TNG (the next generation), still watching some of the Voyager's reruns. I miss DS9, since space does not seem to air it nowadays. It use to, but I missed it because I did not have a DVR at the time. I love Enterprise and I am sad that the show has been cancelled. Difficult to compete with TOS, TNG, DS9 and VOY. Too much reruns on specialized channels seems to water down new series to the point wher they get difficult to sell anymore. Fortunately, I watched all DS9 when they originally aired, a zillion years ago. So, we have TVs, DVRs in Canada. :rose::cool:

This is a pure guess, but "cls" sounds like the old dos (aka console) "clear screen" command. Indeed, I have just tried it and it still clears the screen. system("command name"); also sounds like some invocation of a command. Hope it helps

I have been thinking of that toppic for a while now, and it seems to me that we are moving toward the old "terminal" v.s. "mainframe" model of operation. The browser is the terminal.

I zip my files, then rename the result in a ".zap" file instead of ".zip" This way, gmail does not complain about security issues associated with executable files embedded in the .zip files.

  • War of the Worlds

I got my wife to see it thanks to Tom Cruize and Steven SPielberg. I loved the movie, by the way. My brother tought that Tom's character was too simple, not worthy of his actor's tallents. I disagree! I tought that his character was belivable. What's wrong with a father trying to keep his childrens alive ? I am a science fintion fan, sold to the movie before I even saw it. I must have seen the original over a dozen time. I even bought the DVD 2 or 3 years ago. I think that the new movie stays true to the spirit of the original theme, while innovating just enough to keep my interest. Real good. I'd recomend it in a nanosecond.

Pretty cool. I must admit I had a uneasy feelin, not having to fight my way into the movie theater. I tought it would be much more difficult, but on thursday, 18:35, I could get it just fine. Ther was only about 50 other watching along with me. Maybe it's because I live in Quebec, Canada, where the predominant language is French and I watched it in English. (I speak both languages, but I prefer C++) I don't know, but it does not seem to gather as much of a crowd as I remember from the past. (Maybe it's because I now consider myself to old (38 years old) to see the movie at midnight or 3:00 am, when the real fan goes to see that movie)

  • Bizarre code
    B Bamaco2

I have been avoiding goto in the past, but ever since I have started programming low-level firmware on embedded systems, I have learned the value to make my code leaner, simpler to read, and smaller. Don't get me wrong! I have a C++ project with a total of 781 use of the "for" keyword, but only 88 gotos. (Mostly on error handling situations) Of on my (much bigger) PC project, I have found 2127 "for" loops and 53 "goto" Mostly for "error handling'. (don't confuse "error handling" with "exception handling", in my mind, it's two different things). I often have some code checking 100,000 different things, validating and making sure that all conditions are met before doing something, eventually doing it or displaying a normalized error message and taking some actions. Goto come in handy on those simple "event handler" type of functions, where noting much is done except for validation, presentation of error and invocation of method that actually does the work. (Ok, maybe I prepare a bunch of parameters too) Don't get me going about the goto!

Wow. Thanks for the tips! Now if I could only have access to that radio material in a mp3 format. Its probably old enough to become public domain by now. I'd say the same for the old text only games (there h2g2 & starship titanic). 42

I loved it. I am a fan, after all. I have 5 1/2 books out of the trilogy (Last one, "Salmon of doubt" got published from scraping on the author's hard drive after he passed away in 2001) I also have the DVD edition of the tv show. I wish I had access to the radio series. I wish I still had that text only adventure game by Infocom. I would say that about 25% to 33% of the movie is original, not found anywhere else. This is consistent. The author, Douglas Adams, (here I would say "god save his soul", but he is a firm atheist, so I wont) kept introducing inconsistencies from one version to the next. He was that creative. I am a fan, and very sad that he died. I know that for the last 10 years before he died, he fought and fought and struggled to have a movie out of this series of book. My wife, who doesn't know anything about science fiction, got lots of good laughs out of the movie, even if we watched it in french. My loving it does not cound, since I was sold before I even bought my ticket, but I am pround of the end result of the movie. Also, I can't get the song out of my head, "So long and thanks for all the fish" :) 42

  • Telephone call charging
    B Bamaco2

I heard somewhere that after 5 rings, the counter starts for the charges. the idea is that otherwise, you could devise a morse code like converation. 1 ring then hang-up = dot 2 ring then hang-up = slash Oops! the morse code itself would work and remain free from my own reasoning. Consider another alternative. Lets say a cheap father wants to pick up his daughter at the airport, the daughter and father could devise a complicated scheme indicating at what time to pick her up, based on free phone calls. number of rings = day of week to pick up. (1st call) number of rings = hour of day to pick up. (2nd call) number of rings = minute of hour to pick up. (3rd call) then a call back with 3 rings means "acknowledged" 6 rings means "what ? repeat conversation please" 9 rings means "I lost the code list, call me! 12 rings or more means "pick up the &^%$%$^ phone" Of course, I made up whatever comes avter the "I heard somewhere that we are charged after 5 rings", but considering the audiance here is made of programmers, I tought this silly explaination could make one smile! :)

  • Start Prepping Your Code
    B Bamaco2

Stuck on VC6 because older libraries just work with that version. We will have to pay some cold hard cash to get a supported version recent enough to work on the newer stuff. If it were only for my own code, I could live with the sluggishness of the newer IDE, or at least beg for a PC upgrade. I still hope for upgraded libraries and compiler, whenever it makes sense.
