  • Perforce vs Subversion
    B bje990

I would try out Git.. It's pretty nice and really fast.. minus the small learning curve. After a few days of reading docs.. you'll master it. Git was developed my Mr. Linus Torvald to be a replacement for CVS and SVN. There is actually a google video about Git which he presented. Documentation is kind of hard to find. I did manage to find a really good website by a computer science student/students that will help you with understand Git and how to use it. http://www-cs-students.stanford.edu/~blynn/gitmagic/ Good luck on your search. -BJ

  • Do you believe in ghosts?
    B bje990

It is really interesting to hear about other lives and cultures. I think it is amazing to see how differnt cultures are and yet be so similar. I personally dont believe in ghost. I think that when a human being dies, the human is dead, we are recycled back to the earth. Only our code lives on. (j/k) The idea of ghosts come from a concept of animism. Religion that started talking about life after death probably played a big role in the concept as well. If a human tends to believe in life after death, most tend to perceive things differently, their perception maybe be "off" a little bit. ( no offense to anybody) Eventually there will be a time in life when humans will all agree on the same things. I can get really into the topic and go on about why i think the nature of humans and the ideas of religion are bad, but I will not. If i were you, I would sit down and talk with my wife. I would explain to her that you question the idea of ghosts. Tell her you want to prove that ghost exists. Go out there and experiment, see if you can find/catch anything. -BJ

  • Best C++ Book to get?
    B bje990

I found a book called Beginning C++ Game Programming by Michael Dawson Which wasnt to bad. The book teaches you not about game programming, but understanding the C++ language (The name seems misleading) . It seemed like a pretty fun read and the example in the book were pretty neat too. I bought a copy and gave it to my nephew who is just getting into programming and he loves it. I'm actually surprised because within a month of reading the book, he was being very creative with his code. I mean creative for a 14 year old. He also understands the basic concepts of O.O. Programming. Good luck in your search.

  • Why a career in computer programming sucks
    B bje990

Being a programmer is great. I really do enjoy my work... All the long hours spending in front of my computer... how i neglect my friends and my family... I do have to say that job security isnt so great though. And the pay... well thats another story. I have many friends who have their degrees in computer science and we all make around the $$$ per year. I have some other friends who graduated with business degrees and make way more than I do.. ( even though I was the one to bust my butt )... It's unfair but hey.. thats life... "Cant always get what you want". I dont think that having a career in computer programming sucks. I think a career is what you make of it. And that goes for any job out there. There is always going to be faults with anything you do. You just have to make the best of it and do what you enjoy doing... assuming it doesnt bother or hurt anybody else..

  • Best Linux?
    B bje990

I too would recommend slackware. It's very fast and very powerful. IF you are uncomfortable with compiling packages from source and have trouble finding all the dependencies (it can be a pain ), i would recommend a distribution of Linux with a nice package manager. Ubuntu is a good distro if you are fairly new to linux but it's not as fast as slackware. Overall I found Arch linux to be great. I came across this distro about a year ago and fell inlove with it... It's fast, easy to use and has a great package manager. The documentation is pretty good too. Anyhoo.. good luck
