  • A 3rd worlder's reality check
    B BlameUS

Instead of wishing him good luck, I propose we (those of us in the USA) all lobby our bosses to hire him away from his lovely hometown. In return, he should promise us one new article each week for the rest of his life and not complaining anything about the 1st world. ;)

  • View count for unedited articles only?
    B BlameUS

When I see an unedited article, there seems to be a view count on the upper left corner (how many times it was viewed?). But the feature does not exist for other articles. Why? Just curious.

Never mind, the feature is back. :)

I was amused by the who's who page a few days ago: no matter how you set the "order by" option, there is only one option for you to choose by the way, Chris Maunder always appears at the top of the list (but the rest of the list seems to be ordered by name). I thought it was his subtle way of telling us who is the boss around here. Now that lovely feature disappeared, the list doesn't seem to be ordered at all.

Nish wrote: "I can feel the strong pungent scents of heavy sarcasm blowing hard into my face" Sorry, Nish. I wasn't trying to make fun of you. I know too little about .NET and C#, the number of articles is my only measure to judge the guruness of another person. :) :) :) The fact that you have evolved into a COM newbie says that you have a very bright future ahead of you. :) :) :)

No, I am not joking. Considering the number of C# articles under your name, who else on this site is more qualified for the guru title? ;)

  • "Virtual memory is managed by Windows"
    B BlameUS

But how? is there any documentation for choosing/limiting the swap file size (and thus, maximum virtual memory available)? If you are asking how to do it: on Windows NT 4, do the following: 1. Open the control panel. 2. Double click the "Systems" icon. 3. Go to the "Performance" tab. 4. Click the "Change" button. 5. Make whatever changes and save. 6. Reboot, of course :)

"A few days ago someone mentioned that 12 dollars an hour was a good programmer's wage. (sorry Paul ) I can't believe that anyone could even live on 12 an hour. Anyway that made me think about a couple of things." There is probably no programmer in USA that makes that kind of money unless he is a student working on some poor professor's project. But I personally know some medical PhDs working for NIH (National Institute of Health, USA) who make about 20k/year, which is a lot less than $12/hour considering the long hours they have to spend in the lab everyday.

  • Résumé 0.12
    B BlameUS

"You should never lie on a resume, but being creative doesn't hurt." In other words, lie with integrity and style. :) It has been 2 year since I sent out my resume to anyone, I have been told by people in HR and Recruiting firms that they noticed my resume from a pile because I put my Chinese name (printed in "cursive" font) on the top line. So I think odd things like Bob's image will definitely help to get people's attention. ;)

"Worse advice. Anyone who expects 4 years commercial experience from someone newly graduated is not worth working for. I got a job with NO degree, NO experience, and I told the truth. Half of the stuff they were looking for, I told my future boss I had no idea about, because it was true." You are a lucky man! Your advice may not work for most people, too bad. The reality is, incompetent developers get hired by incompetent managers all the time. :((

    B BlameUS

terribly bad advice ! But it will probably get you a job The advice may be too extreme but it has some truth in it. Even peopel with good experience and qualification lie at interviews. Sure, they can afford to tell the truth in some technical areas, but if you ask them "why do you want to leave the current position", they would give you crap about "wanting to learn the new technology and meet new challenge" instead of "I lost my temper at current job and called my boss a total idiot". ;)
