To stinking many of them. Not only not checking it, but leaving it broken for the weekend. I've had people do that when just checking in code to the repo, and that's bad enough, but I've also seen people releasing code to production without checking, and then not responding to phone calls all weekend. Bloody torture time.

For that price, you can get a really good gaming machine, with monitor, never mind a dev one. :) You won't have any problems whatsoever spending that much, and can get a decent one for half that.

You make fun, but there's a grain of truth to that, especially if you combine COBOL with CICS. If you've ever worked with CICS, the web, in concept at least, ain't so strange.

  • My Apple Experience
    B Brad Stiles

I have personally not had the level of frustration with my iPhones that you have, but I've heard of others like you. They seem to be rare, but that doesn't help the afflicted at all. This is going to sound flippant, but it's not. The few times I have had a problem, I've resorted to having my 22 year old daughter take my phone to the Apple Store. My 5'8", wavy blonde haired, slender, very attractive 22 year old daughter, who has seemingly perfected the art of mentally controlling men, especially the nerds at the Apple Store, and convincing them of pretty much anything she wants, including replacing malfunctioning iPhones for free. So if you have one of those types of daughters, or know someone who does, I suggest giving it a shot. And yes, I am perversely proud of her. Horribly evil of me, I know, but I'm a horribly evil type of person in general.

I feel for you Marc. I was in a somewhat similar situation a few years back. An app, well written, performant, stable, with both unit and integrated tests for the various end to end scenarios it would handle, was taken over by an "experienced" programmer who proceeded to disable the tests as he changed code and broke them. They didn't support his new and improved way of doing things. But required five times as much manual testing as the previous version. He's gone, and the app is now back to its stable, performant, tested state. :)

Maybe. If presented correctly. More likely, IME, is that their know-it-all attitude will lead them to believe he's criticizing, rather than teaching, and they'll resent it.

  • What will you be if computers weren't in existence?

Most likely, I would still be in the restaurant business. I worked over 6 years in one before the Marine Corps taught me how to program correctly. It's possible that I would be retired now, having sold the restaurant that I bought when I was 30. :)

    B Brad Stiles

This why I don't generally comment my code. :) Once in a while I will, if it's a case of a brief explanation of an unusual algorithm, or it's not obvious as to why I did something. I adamantly refuse to comment what code is doing, except with regard to the XML comments on library code. Yes, I'm one of those people.

  • How many devices do you have plugged in to your USB port(s)?
    B Brad Stiles

    At work:

    1. Keyboard
    2. Mouse
    3. Third monitor.
    4. I also charge my Mio Link when it needs it.

    At home:

    1. Keyboard
    2. Mouse
    3. Three external hard drives, one of which acts as a NAS.
    4. Printer
    5. Bluetooth dongle
    6. Camera (one of those that sits atop the monitor)
    7. UPS
    8. A remote control for Windows Media Player
    9. Xbox 360 controller
    10. Joystick/throttle or steering wheel, depending on the game
    11. Pedals (yes, I have two sets or those as well, one for driving and one for flying)
    12. iPhone/iPad

9 and up are not plugged in all the time, though one of (9 or (10 and 11)) is generally plugged in at any given time.

  • Why XKCD sucks today
    B Brad Stiles

It's not always intended to be funny, per se. Sometimes the intent, at least what I get from it, is to make one stop and think, or appreciate something a little more. He also from time to time just pays tribute to someone or something that is important to him. Many are a visual, math or other pun, and can take some thought to "get", and while I'll freely admit I don't always get what he's trying to say, I still read it every day. :)

I have an Apple TV. It works well, and will stream netflix and hulu plus (not hulu) even without using iTunes. I haven't seen anything concerning Amazon Prime. My daughter uses the XBox, which has apps for all three. A friend of mine swears by his Roku, but he also has a bunch of other gear set up for streaming to ever device in his house. Another friend has that Google dongle, and he really likes it, but I don't know what capabilities or dependencies it has.

  • My last day at this job is tomorrow
    B Brad Stiles

As someone else pointed out, if you are in the U.S. and you've given your two week notice, with some kind of "my last day will be ...", and then they let you go early, they are firing you, i.e. terminating you involuntarily. Thus, you rate unemployment. It might be hard to get, especially if you're scheduled to start work, and they will likely appeal, which will draw the process out futher, but you rate it.
