  • If you could run all your apps (games too) on Linux?
    C cegarman

Hi, One suggestion I do have for Linux distro providers is to create a windows interface. Not the code, just the UI. Most of the people I know don't want to learn another interface. They are interested in another OS aside from Windows but have 0 interest in another UI. Windows-like UI's hasn't worked for them. They want a Windows 7 type UI or even a windows 10 UI.

  • Can a student that can't even handle freshman calculus possibly be a good programmer?
    C cegarman

Greetings, When I started out, I was going to be an engineer (Civil or EE - wasn't sure). Took Fortran (yes that long ago) as my first programming language. 4th Semester Calculus was my downfall with 49% as my final grade. I then switch to MIS and finished my degree in that. Additional math courses were non-existent except for Statistics. I managed a 91% average in those 3 courses. The Calculus courses were interesting and I used them at one clients location. However as a rule, wasn't needed. Critical Thinking? yes! Logic? Yes! Calculus? Not really... Conceptualize multi-dimensional array? Yes! Slide Rule? Fun but not really needed... Math does help but Calculus doesn't seem to be necessary,

Case in point: the 3 top level people at SOuthwest airlines are all accountants. They gave out over $5 Billion US dollars in stock dividends. They ignore the 1908s' level tech running their IT operations. IT cost them fines and passengers back in 2022(?) when they cancelled thousand of flights do to issues with their IT. Their IT is admittedly underfunded.

  • New Old Disks?
    C cegarman

Hi, I'm a fan of a functional drive. I've owned WD, Seagate, Toshiba, HGST, Deskstar and a couple other no-namers. For a couple of years, my WD's were shining stars and Seagate was garbage. Then it became Deskstar and HGST with the WD and Seagate's being terminal garbage. Then Seagate's were the king of the world and WD was the dregs. From my experience (for what its worth), Seagate and WD were the consistent drives. Either really outstanding and will go forever or garbage and toss now!! At present, I have a mixture of 1TB, 2TB and 4TB drives running. Approximately half are Seagate and half are WD. An old HGST is in the mix as well. I have a couple of Toshiba portable drives I just purchased. I purchased two portable Toshibas and one of them was DOA. Purchased another and returned the dead one to Amazon. That one is good to go. Your mileage will vary.

Hi, Having worked on the "Big Iron" for a number of years....I would meet with various members of the IBM organization from time to time. Was in a meeting once (Virtual) and this comment was made by a higher level IBM VP (who hadn't remembered/ realized there were non-IBMer's present. " Slow software sells fast hardware " There were a number of chuckles etc from the meeting invitee's. And that IBM VP moved on from there.

  • MFC? WinForms? I gotta ask... why?
    C cegarman

Greetings, Organizations don't want to fund migrating from older methods to something newer until they absolutely have to. My last company had apps using VB (Classic), VB.Net, and C# with Winforms and a few WPF and MFC apps as well as COBOL and Salesforce. There were a few inhouse apps using Access. Some of the clients were all about using the newer tech however balked at the cost of training and converting.

Greetings! I have a laptop with an Amazon Basic Docking station running 2 27" monitors. also have a wireless keyboard (Logitech K350), wireless mouse, multi-function printer /scanner/fax/copier, a couple of moveable shelves, a stand that the keyboard slides under that supports the two monitors and the docking station. An amazon echo for background music, 2 power bars plugged into an APS unit (650 watt) plus a PC-100A multi-switch to control the flow of power from the APS to the rest of the equipment. Also have a Linux (Mint 21.1) box as a backup for all the stuff (3 PC's) with 8TB of storage and 16GB Ram. All in/on a built-in desk that is 8 feet long (2.8. meters) with drawers and storage space. C cegarman

Greetings, Our internet original provider got expensive (20 years). We decided to try T-Mobile Internet. It runs off of the cell phone towers. I did check the distance to the nearest tower and it was approx 3/4's of a mile away. (just over 1 kilometer) At present, we're getting around 245 - 400 mps. Speed depends on the time of day. Ping does suck though running around 18-25 so intense gaming isn't really possible. And yes, the old internet provider has been sending us letters and other mailings to try and get us back. Cost is less than half of what were were paying before. Works for me!

Venting on! This is a vent!!! <=== Why does Microsoft make everything so D*** difficult? I don't want to use Windows Hello... Stop prompting me!! Why does the system configuration require editing the registry? Why are they attempting to duplicate the Mac experience? Why does updating a simple action mandate a blessing from the Pope and/or a drunk Newfie? Why are they making the simplest operation a major exercise in futility and frustration??? Why is it that .... H***, I'm could go on for quite awhile but I won't. Suffice to say I am not a fan of Windows 11. Venting Off!! If it wasn't for the fact that I am deeply mired (?) in the Windows environment. I would move to Linux. I might just consider learning how to develop the a KDE type interface for Linux and write one that emulates Windows 7!!

Hi, had an HP 2940 that was great for printing but the cartridges were hideously expensive. I then went with a brother multi-function printer/fax/scanner (laser). It lasted through 7 years of cat hair, coffee and the sale bin paper. The network port stopped working. The USB port still worked so I gave it to a neighbor who has 1 pc, not 3. Bought a replacement Brother multi-functional printer/scanner/fax (laser) unit. So far so good.

    C cegarman

Greetings, I've used everything from 3 ring binders (IBM Mainframes) to "Note" filling a folder with a scary amount of entries to OneNote, Excel and a home grown DB. And all of that was stored on my workstation as well as being emailed to my personal email account. (USB drives were verboten.) In many cases, the USB drive was disabled except for certain tech support logins. The built-in CD/DVD drive was limited to read-only. We had Dev Ops but after some notes 'disappeared' I carried on with my system (was told it wasn't needed :suss:) The person who deleted the entries claimed it was a 'mistake'.  :wtf: What ever...
