  • Vista: first thoughts

I always found XP ran fast, but it seemed to get bogged down and jerky (especially the UI) when it was under a pretty heavy load. Vista runs a lot smoother under load for me. Best regards, Dana

  • Vista: first thoughts
    D Dana Holt

Hey Chris, I've been using Vista Ultimate for a few weeks now, and I have to say I really like it. Navigating the system is different. At first I was unsure about it, but it didn't take long to get used to it. Most of the changes I really like now. The UI is much faster, and it definitely multi-tasks a lot smoother than XP. It is also more stable than XP when it first came out. Right now I have Virtual PC 2007 running with XP Pro, 2003 Server and 2000 Server. All are running at a moderate load, and I am running VS 2005 on Vista. I don't notice any significant slowdown, and the UI is still fast as ever. All my software has worked as well, only had problems with one application. It was writing the the "Program Files" folder, which we all know it should not be doing. Just adjusted some permissions for it, and it works fine now. Personally I like the eye candy in the UI, but that is subjective. The UI speed is definitely impressive (I have a GeForce 6600 w/ 256MB). That's just my $0.02 USD. ;) Best regards, Dana

  • WARNING from SerGio
    D Dana Holt

Bill, why do you think these people post negative comments about you? I mean everyone meets a few people they just don't click with now and then, but you have well above the average. The negative comments you bring on yourself for the most part IMO. For example, you posted a comment on a CodeGuru article that 99.9999% of programmers couldn't create an office assistant type application. Then you proceed to tell the author his code isn't that good. WTF? That just shows that you have no idea what you are talking about. Then, you pretend to be such an "expert" on programming. Arrogance is bad, but unjustified arrogance is 100 times worse. Maybe you should have used your "exceptional" security experience to secure you site so nobody could hack it. Also, why do you need the private investigator? You surely have the skills to track this person down yourself. Maybe you are too busy making those infomercials? It figures that you would be the kind of person to sue someone in civil court over something like this. I mean, come on, $20 million in damages? Who are you kdding? How do you know it was anyone from The Code Project anyway? If you are the same offline as you are online I am sure the line of people that would do something like this to you forms to the left. You need to grow up, treat people with respect, and deflate your head. Then you won't have these problems. -- Dana Holt Xenos Software

I just wanted to let everyone know that I have released a FREEWARE Outlook XP extension that adds a new tab to the "Tools, Options..." dialog. It lets you specify which file extensions to allow through the new file security feature. It is in beta but has been very stable. Also, my program Lucid is now FREEWARE. • I don't give out passwords, not even to programmers...
    D Dana Holt

Just thought I'd share this experience. I was asked to take a look at an Access database, but the user wouldn't give me the password to open the database. He would like to come by my office every time the thing crashes, or I have to reopen it to type in the password. :omg: I asked for the password, but he would not give it to me. His response was, "I don't give out passwords, not even to programmers." :wtf: Hmmmm, so I did the only logical thing I could do. I said, "Okay, I'll see what I can do." Then I sent him on his way, recovered the password myself, and did what I needed to do with the database. ;) Anyone else have an experience like this? -- Dana Holt Xenos Software

What if Data Ran Windows 98? WORF: Captain, there are three Romulan warships uncloaking dead ahead. PICARD: On screen. [The main viewing screen changes to a pattern of horizontal lines, each only a single pixel wide.] PICARD: Data, what's wrong here? DATA: Captain, the main viewscreen does not have sufficient video memory to display an image of this size. May I suggest that you select a lower resolution? PICARD: Make it so. [The screen blanks, and then an image appears, with big, blocky square pixels. Three objects appear in the center, which could be Romulan warbirds, but which actually look more like the aliens in Space Invaders.] PICARD: Data, open a hailing channel to the Romulans. DATA: Aye, sir. [Data picks up an hourglass from the floor beside him, turns it over, and places it on the console in front of him. He punches some buttons on the console and sits motionless for several seconds. A flash of light blossoms from one of the Romulan ships on the viewscreen.] WORF: Incoming plasma torpedo, Captain! PICARD: Shields up! DATA: I'm sorry, Captain, but I am still attempting to complete your last instruction. I must ask you to wait until I have finished before you issue your next command. PICARD: What on earth do you mean? Data, this is *important*! I want those shields up *right now.* DATA: I'm sorry, Captain, but I am still attempting to complete your last instruction. I must ask you to wait until I have finished before you issue your next command. LAFORGE: Allow me, captain. [to Data] Control-alt-delete, Data. [Data removes the hourglass from the console, and returns it to the floor.] DATA: The Romulans are not responding to my hails. Press my nose to cancel and return to Windows. Pull my left ear to close this communications channel which is not responding. You will lose any information sent by the Romulans. [LaForge pulls Data's left ear.] PICARD: Shields... [There is a tremendous explosion. The bridge shakes violently, and all the crew members are thrown to the floor. A shower of sparks erupts from Wesley Crusher's station at the helm, throwing Wesley back away from the console.] PICARD: Up, Data! DATA: Aye, sir. RIKER: All decks, damage report! WORF: Captain, Ensign Crusher is injured. He appears to be unconscious. [Data picks up the hourglass again, places it on his console, and punches some more buttons. He waits a few seconds, then puts the hourglass back on the floor.] DATA: Shields are now up, captain. PICARD: And
