Yes, but when the employee doesn't pay they go after the company. And, according to the cardholder agreement, the company is on the hook in such instances. They need to offer termination to the people that ran up such bills.

I absolutely LOVE that. Perfectly sums up a lot of posts I've seen in a lot of threads.

This may seem to be an odd position for me to take...I've noticed the same with climate change. It galls me when someone says they don't "believe" in it. It's not a religion. The data either supports it or it doesn't. And, the data certainly supports it and our contribution to it. Somewhere around 2,000 scientific papers supporting this and around 3 that don't. Sounds pretty conclusive to me...

I feel stupid.I used to (and still do) have an issue with semicolons when coding in C/C++. I will get so used to placing them at the end of each line that I will inadvertently put one at the end of an if/while/for statement and then try to figure out why the following code only ran once.

Does anybody 'Hide extensions for known file types'?I ALWAYS! unhide file name extensions. I do it on my friends PCs, too, if I get the chance. Leaving them hidden is an extreme security risk and I don't have a clue why that is the default for Windows. Suppose someone sends you a file named FUNNY_CATS.JPG.EXE What do you see when you look at the filename with extensions hidden? Experienced users (like you and me) would notice that the icon is wrong for a JPEG file and immediately suspect it but most users would not notice that.

Augusta Ada ByronI'm not sure where I stand on this. According to Babbage it looks like she did most of it. From Wikipedia: Babbage published the following on Ada's contribution, in his Passages from the Life of a Philosopher (1864):[73] "I then suggested that she add some notes to Menabrea's memoir, an idea which was immediately adopted. We discussed together the various illustrations that might be introduced; I suggested several but the selection was entirely her own. So also was the algebraic working out of the different problems, except, indeed, that relating to the numbers of Bernoulli, which I had offered to do to save Lady Lovelace the trouble. This she sent back to me for an amendment, having detected a grave mistake which I had made in the process."

[Solved] Why Do Computer Counts from Zero. Also - The first positive number in any number system is zero. Another way to state it: All positive number systems start with zero.

Astronomy software?Celestia - That was the nation declared by James Thomas Mangan back in the forties. It consisted of all the space above the Earth's atmosphere - effectively the entire rest of the universe. He was actually successful in registering it with the Cook County Recorder of Deeds and Titles. Tried to get international recognition through the United Nations but they blew him off. He even printed stamps and minted several gold coins (one Celeston). They're very sought after by collectors now. And, he issued "official" passports to a couple of the Apollo astronauts before they went to the moon. Wierd guy...

Astronomy software?I almost exclusively use Distant Suns on my Android and iStuff. It's very comprehensive for astronomers - I haven't used hard copy star charts since I got it. Not sure if it would aid you in stellar navigation, though. It uses a pretty comprehensive database for almost all the items and most stars, including distance measurements. You might be able to derive something from that.

IF-free codesActually, modern compilers do a very good job of optimization. They've come a long way over the years. You probably won't see enough of a change to notice.

New to writing code...brain is melting......I'd start with http://www.w3schools.com and go from there.

Confession: BackupI run a Windows Home Server 2011 machine with a 3TB drive that automatically performs monthly, weekly, daily and incremental backups of two of my PCs at home - mine and my wife's. I was running an older version (2003 I think) and successfully did a complete restore of my C: drive a couple of times. Upgraded to 2011 recently - I "think" it's working OK  but I haven't had to do a restore yet.

How to inform about a website that it can be hacked? Not sure what might happen. You never can tell. A kid in Canada recently reported to the college he was attending that there was a flaw in their software that leaked personal information for all their students. He was expelled.

A more realistic tech-movie...The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Some of the computer responses are a bit faster than expected in real life. But, there's real SQL in there if one looks at the computer screens closely. Some of the code is off a little bit (seems to be a merge of MySql, SQL Server and Oracle), but at least it's a lot closer than "This is UNIX. I know this!"

A more realistic tech-movie...Wait until Windows 8. Have any of you "played" with any of the previews? I have. What a cluster... X|

What about W8?I've tried all the preview versions of Win8 on a test machine except the latest release preview. I've downloaded it but haven't installed it yet. I hope it's 1000 times better than the ones I've seen so far. One issue - I am constantly cutting and pasting information from one document to another. Win8 (at least the versions I've tried so far) brings every application up full screen so that is no longer possible. And, just shutting down your PC is, like, a five step process - if you can even find it in the first place. What a cluster. Let's start a petition to bring back Windows ME, BOB and Clippy... ;P

var tomorrow = ?But, hey, it worked without errors when he wrote and debugged it on April 25th. Actually it looks like it might have been used to trigger some event on the 25th - but for only 2012? Scratch that! Why code to look for tomorrow instead of today. I'm through trying to rationalize this. I guess I try to assume there is a reason for everything and people are better then they really are. :wtf: Hope it wasn't moved into production.

Yes, but in an even contest, natural stupidity wins every time.
