Being told to fix bugs caused by othersI am not sure about what is correct/incorrect in this particular case. But, I feel you should get recognized for that work you did; either writing some new code or fixing bugs created by others. Here's a story. You might already know it. There was a farmer who had a horse and a goat…..One day, the horse became ill and he called the veterinarian, who said: - Well, your horse has a virus. He must take this medicine for three days. I’ll come back on the 3rd day and if he’s not better, we’re going to have to put him down. Nearby, the goat listened closely to their conversation. The next day, they gave him the medicine and left. The goat approached the horse and said: - Be strong, my friend. Get up or else they’re going to put you to sleep! On the second day, they gave him the medicine and left. The goat came back and said: - Come on buddy, get up or else you’re going to die! Come on, I’ll help you get up. Let’s go! One, two, three… On the third day, they came to give him the medicine and the vet said: - Unfortunately, we’re going to have to put him down tomorrow. Otherwise, the virus might spread and infect the other horses. After they left, the goat approached the horse and said: - Listen pal, it’s now or never! Get up, come on! Have courage! Come on! Get up! Get up! That’s it, slowly! Great! Come on, one, two, three… Good, good. Now faster, come on…… Fantastic! Run, run more! Yes! Yay! Yes! You did it, you’re a champion!!! All of a sudden, the owner came back, saw the horse running in the field and began shouting: - It’s a miracle! My horse is cured. We must have a grand** **party. Let’s kill the goat!!!!* *** The Lesson:* this often happens in the workplace & life in general . Nobody truly knows which employee or people actually deserves the merit of success & are in fact contributing towards success , or who’s actually contributing the necessary support to make things happen. Be grateful. Remember……… *** LEARNING TO LIVE WITHOUT RECOGNITION IS A SKILL!!!! ***

Working in a big Vs mid size organisationvery encouraging. best answer. thanks.

Working in a big Vs mid size organisationbtw, I used Clear case for 5 years and it does not really suck, although there are better tools I guess. but I was not ranting about the version control software.

Working in a big Vs mid size organisationI have been in the software industry for 6 years now and worked for two organizations, over 5 years in a mid size org and less than a year in one of the biggest enterprise software manufacture in the world. There is a huge difference in the way the two work, the way how the daily business run in these companies. I wanted to share a recent experience regarding a fix. It’s a one line fix, I think it was a mistake by the original developer who is not fully clear with the expected functionality or he was not informed well; it was a one line fix and I did it. Then I get 15 bugs assigned to me asking me the fix the same for 15 different branches/labels, port the fix to 15 different builds. I took me one day to figure out the fix and more than a week to find out the correct labels for the rest 15, my manager was not sure about what labels to use, the product mangers were not sure which customer is on what release etc etc. It was messy. Lots of emails were exchanged to figure out the right labels. I had to redo some work because I was using wrong labels. These are my early days of being a part of a big enterprise software organization, I am not sure if I can fit here. At least these are not the kind of challenges I would like to take up. Is this how everyone works.

Serial number in SQLI got another solution
select * from ABC t,( select level R from dual connect by level <= 6) t1
where t.SEQUENCE(+) = t1.r
order by r -
Serial number in SQLHello, I have a table ABC with two columns NAME and SEQUENCE. The valid values of sequence are from 1..50. The table may not have all the Sequence number. For example following is the data in my table.. NAME SEQUENCE ------------------------ Jonh| 5 Amy| 1 Suresh| 3 I need a SQL to get the data like NAME SEQUENCE ------------------------ Amy| 1 | 2 Suresh| 3 | 4 Jonh | 5 |6 |7 .. .. .. |50 Basically I want to have rows for the sequence numbers which are not present i my table. I thought of using the following query to generate a sequence and then join, but does not help
select rownum from dual connect by rownum <=50
I tried something like
with temp as (select name, sequence from abc where supp_ref_order is not null order by sequence )
select rownum as num, temp.name from dual, temp connect by rownum <=50 where temp.sequence =num -
Don't like the new jobI remembered something one of my earlier manager told me. When you join a organisation, observe people around you; after couple of months you should find at least one person whom you can idolize, the person you want to become after couple of years. If you don't find any, you are at a wrong place. I have found none so far.

Don't like the new jobWorking in mid-size was easier to for me to express my ideas. If I thought I had a better idea for a UI, I would go and show it to the PM. Here everything is decided and comes out in a document. Very difficult for ideas to travel in bottom up direction.

Why do you think your employeer is responsible for your on going education?
I don't think my employer is responsible for the education, I wanted to mention that I had many opportunities at my old employer to learn new stuff.

learn something new in your own time, apply it at work & make sure everyone knows about it
Thank you. I will take out some of my team to learn stuff, don't know if I can apply at work. Wanted to know what should one check before you change your job.. Thanks.

Don't like the new jobHello, I was happy with my first job in a mid-size software organisation (work, team, pay were all good) but had to change because I had to move to a different city to stay close to my family. I got a job in one of the biggest software company in the world. I joined thinking the bigger company would provide be better future prospective but honestly I am tied in a company where I cannot apply myself. I have to work on a framework which I don't really like, the work process is laborious. Getting simple things done takes lots of time because things going round-n-round. I think I have made a mistake by changing the job only to move to a different city. More than that, taking up a job going by the Company's reputation instead of checking out the work I would be doing. I have been working since three years and learned so many thing during the first job because I got a bigger view of the work to be done. I am now just applying what I learnt in my earlier company, no new learning for me expect working on a application framework which is recognized elsewhere. I don't feel good working here, I don't want to change the job because its been just 6 months here. How should I proceed.

Smart individualsBrainiacV: I don't have enough words to thank you for letting me know many things (we call it 'Gyan' in Hindi, meaning divine knowledge). I completely agree with your 'mental pigeon hole' theory, completely goes with my manager. He makes very quick judgments (many time very effective) and has a preset mind with a notion that a person cannot scale to a higher level. In my country, we ought to fight for many things unrelated out of work (more than you can image) to make a living. I am glad the you fought. Sometimes you are tired or you have too many things to fight. I don't know if it's just me, my tolerance towards being unappreciated seem to be very less and most of the times I don't take it good.

DocumentsWhenever there is a change in executive management, they have to do something, they have to. They would have to provide some graphs, numbers etc. There was a change in the executive team of one of our customer. The first thing he did.. lets go for some other software, that's it. I find it dumb too, but otherwise after an year the management guy will not have anything to show.
-
Smart individualsThanks a lot. That helped. An update, this guy is now soft pegged to me; he kind of reports to me now. Your suggestions really help.
-
Smart individualsAbsolutely fair.

Smart individualsI am glad that you have a different view. I feel writing one line English equivalent for an error code you introduced in not equivalent to cleaning a room. If I am wrong, I am a room cleaner.

What the question directed at me?

Smart individualsThanks. That was kind of soothing. I just want to share something. I am in the industry for 4 yours (its been 4 years I passed out of college) and my manger for 25 years, he would have seen people who are extremely smart and good team members. The team is relatively young now and he might be missing those kind of people. As a individual, I try to put my best efforts, learn from my mistakes, don't repeat them and always to work as team, work hard; by doing so, I hope I would be a better developer in future.

Smart individualsIf it only about learning from folks, you can learn from anyone/everyone. It can be either "how to be" or "how not to be"... like wise. You can even learn from arrogant folks..... the lesson is not be arrogant.
