Change the font to Wingdings, with font size of 4.

  • So this is what MBAs learn at University
    E Erik Burd

As someone with an MBA, I agree. Some of the classes were total fluff and what I refer to as "refund classes". Some of us in my cohort still joke about them! The best classes by far were those taught from active professionals in the industry, where we worked on real exercises, and not those cooked-up case studies from Ivey, Harvard and Darden. Thankfully there were enough of them to make it worthwhile. It was a nice journey and I learned a lot, but yeah I wouldn't spend $250K at some overrated business school.

  • Your thoughts on 1099, please
    E Erik Burd

I would talk with a CPA about this. I did 1099 and although it's not hard sending in your estimated taxes every quarter, it's a bit tricky. You need to make sure that you're sending in the right amount or you will face a penalty. If things change from the previous year then you will need to make some adjustments. I got screwed pretty bad because my wife made more bonuses so we ended up being a little short. Not terrible but instead of a potential refund we owed a small amount. Also consider the cost of health insurance. That's a real killer, and now that I have a FT job with benefits I'm saving over $9K USD a year on that alone.

Thanks for the warning. One recent update killed my Intel compiler so it wouldn't run. I ended up uninstalling it. So much for updates. I guess they fired their QA department and we're the testers instead. Nice going!

  • Codility test as part of job interview
    E Erik Burd

You're right - you have to write the code the way they want it written. Codility and other online coding testing sites are proof that they're lazy and don't know how to hire engineers. I've seen many gross mistakes in problems and fail to see what value it really provides outside of stealing money from HR. Seriously though - I just find a topic or two on their resume and drill down into it. I ask to provide a diagram of the system, go into design issues, problems they ran into, how they were resolved, etc. It's more effective and much harder to fake.

  • TFS CodeReview question
    E Erik Burd

I've worked in medical devices for the past 10 years. The longest code review we ever did was a day, and that included checking out the code and performing a full regression test with the physical devices. Small checkins are good, large checkins are bad. Merging can be challenging enough with a small checkin, depending on what's being changed. Then add a two week time frame and that's a huge disaster waiting to happen. Two weeks? Time to bring this up with the manager or whoever is in charge. That's ridiculous.

  • This is why web development can be so hard
    E Erik Burd

This is why I ran away from web development years ago and never looked back. Mind you that was back in the Web 1.0 era, but it really sucked back then because the development tools were all half-baked, no APIs wanted to talk to each other without rolling your own "translators", and of course the Browser Wars. My sympathy goes out to web developers.

  • We hire the best, just like everyone else
    E Erik Burd

I'm with you - if I needed the cash ($25/hour is a pittance for any engineering work) then yes, I would go for it. I could see a small weekend-long project but 3-8 weeks? That's crazy. I could easily see potential conflicts with your existing job, let along IP issues. I would rather spend that time working on a side project and use that to get interviews. Although that would be "free" I would at least have a portfolio to show off as opposed to something that would be effectively owned by them and probably under some sort of NDA.

  • Do agile certifications mean anything?
    E Erik Burd

The funny thing about agile certifications is that although my CSM certification expired in 2013 (and is CLEARLY listed on my resume), I get phone calls from recruiters asking for a certified CSM. Certifications are pretty much useless with exceptions in security and some IT shops. Otherwise they're pretty much only useful as low grade toilet paper.

  • You should be tech-agnostic in every development project
    E Erik Burd

In my experience, I've found that the wrong tech stack occurs more frequently than it should. The main problem points to non-technical managers (or washed-up engineers) who insist on using some outdated piece of s*** framework, stack or tool that cripples future functionality.
