Electron Projects -
Is it just me?Or is CP acting a bit wonky today? Slow page loads. Stalling completely at times. The beginning of the end...???

Electron ProjectsIn case you change your mind on the "roll your own" project, give JellyFin a look. I recently switched to JellyFin after years of using Plex on a NAS. JellyFin is clean and fast with none of the bloat of Plex.

Preemptive goodbyesjeron1 wrote:
P.S. Mike, your uncle had a great sense humor. (guessing, hope I'm right)
 He passed a few years ago at the ripe old age of 89. He did it right. Calmly while sleeping - not screaming bloody murder like the other people in the car he was driving. ;P

Preemptive goodbyesOn the chance that CP goes the way of the Dodo[^] in the coming days or weeks there is a fairly good chance that it will happen without warning. Poof! Spooky dust! When / if this happens many of us will also simply "disappear". For me this is it. There is no "other" site where I participate or even communicate. If CP goes away so does FGS1963. To all of you - it's been a pleasure. You're mostly a smart group. Your humour is right up my alley. I've learned a ton about tech, about different cultures and hell - about life. I'm sticking around to the bitter end but if that end happens abruptly - please accept my great thanks for having "known" you. FYI - FGS1963 is actually a 2nd login made ~3 years ago when I decided to return after an extended absence. I killed my original login after ~18 years and 20k+ messages. I was much chattier back then. My original login is actually still quoted in one signature that I know of. Well, actually my late uncle is quoted by reference to me - but I'll take it. I was actually here back in the days of Nish, Paul Watson, Shog9, David Wulff, etc...

Everyone has heard of the Marx BrothersBut few remember their younger sister, Onya, who invented the starting pistol. *Too warm for a coat. I'll just slip out the back door.

Linux not as safe as it used to beTNCaver wrote:
I'd say that your whataboutism compares apples to oranges as far as the two OS's, and not true for the apps.
Not sure what you mean. Are you suggesting that Windows apps are more or less secure than the OS???
TNCaver wrote:
The monetary motivation for hacking Linux is statistically irrelevant compared to that of Windows.
Ummm... no. You must only be thinking about desktop PCs (which was relevant in the 80s and 90s) but not so today. When you consider servers, cloud systems, mobile devices, embedded devices, super computers, etc... the percentages and "monetary motivations" are completely flipped.
-
Linux not as safe as it used to beFor the sake of argument let's say "No. Nobody with the skills or knowledge to recognize security issues is looking at Linux or FOSS software. What exactly does that say about Windows (and Windows apps) which are consistently found to be less secure?

Phil DonahueI was never a fan of his show. IMO it was one of the first to trivialize (and then politicize) serious social topics and pit people against each other for ratings. A pre-cursor to today's gotcha "journalism" practiced by so many. :|

Approaching my limit...I'm 18 months away from fts retirement. The SO has been "retired" for ~5 years already. Luckily no in-laws around and our house is big enough that we can do our own things without bothering each other.

If you could run all your apps (games too) on Linux?I gave up on Windows (at home) many years ago. The wife uses a Mac and I mainly use Fedora WS. I keep a ChromeBox as an extended experiment. I don’t miss Microsoft stuff at all.

New Linux box adviceIf I recall correctly Intel sold their NUC business to Asus... FWIW - I have an Asus ExpertCenter PN64-B w/ i5-13500H, Integrated Iris graphics, 32Gb DDR5 4800, 1TB Samsung 990 PRO M.2 SSD (System) plus a 1TB Samsung 850 EVO mSATA SSD (Back Up). I'm running Fedora WS. It's generally fast and pretty quiet.
