Mark, sorry for confusion I meant that in the context of my previous IT job. No offense to the programmers on here but normal people can be idiots especially in KY and some do not want to learn. I was referring more to normal users not programmers which deserve a special right to themselves.

I level with you on most of this except most users barely know where the power button is on their computer. I worked in IT at a public K-12 school system and the multimedia/computer teachers were the only ones who had half a clue about them(I am from KY). The science teachers do not know how to program or even learn. High science class was the exception probably.

No, this is really referring to a difference of opinion not absurdity. Because a programming language being irrelevant is bases on overall demand and assembly language and/or fortran or any other language is used in specific scenarios. Those 70-80's languages are only used in nasa mainframes or any mainframe which are mostly irrelevant because of the training tine required to show people how to use one. Time sharing was a big problem because once an connection was established to the machine you could only have a handful of connections depending on the setup. This slowly changed but initially was not. Look up thee enaic computer.

Sorry bill about the mess (flips his coin like Han solo in the cantana to bill), I will make up for up for it with an article here soon. Some people here must be older programmers to know what the nuclear systems are written in.

Thanks for that. I forgot for a moment about Fortran but if I did I would have mentioned it. Was assembly language really used in nuclear systems?

Not meaning to be rude but unless they changed the options you can have it up to 6 months. However, a WSUS server could make it up to a year. I used the update block option myself but so far have had no real problems with visual studio ( I upgraded to 2015 a while back to see what the fuss was about but the only computer with problems was a old computer I had 5 years or more already). So, it seems like the privacy paranoia has you crazy. If you do not like updating go to linux. It's almost the same as saying Linux is a secure OS which is false. Linux does something similar with updates (I think Ubuntu has a similar option but you need to set it up). Apple even does automatic updates and their company is not Microsoft and they force their opinions into the OS despite backlash while Microsoft listens. If you hate updating ask Microsoft to bring back the block update until you are ready option like in XP. That's why they have the windows insider program. So, if you really are an avid windows user and not a crazy privacy troll put your big boy pants on and tell Microsoft that you want it like it was in windows XP.

I've heard of people using virtual box with the windows phone image is their a converter app out their that does that? Well, I mean linking it to the xde app (somebody in the article I read awhile back was doing registry hacks though). Personally, I like getting msdnaa software for free. I plan on going back to school and learning more about computer science as I get older.

Their is c/c++ programming forums too. That was a typo. But your a skeptic so try out UWP for yourself. Just remember about what happened to assembly language. All the years wasted to only be replaced with c/c++. However, I prefer vb.net for most apps because their is not a lot of difference to c# with the exception of games/hardcore apps which I prefer to go to c/c++. I found out with a little help on vb.net forums about how to call do p-invokes on device drivers. Only can be coded in c#? No. For the most part, you can code in native c/c++ for apps.

You have no idea about UWP do you? I rarely develop for windows phone and use the desktop extensions of UWP to skip said non-sense and games for xbox is why I chose it but you can even get around that for xbox one to a certain extent. Anyways, I basically said you could still develop dotnet framework applications because UWP is a "choice" if your developing for windows 10 not a mandated requirement. Microsoft makes it seem that way but it is NOT. If you believe otherwise Microsoft has fooled you. VB.NET forum is going very well because their are still dot net developers on windows 10.

    Quote:

The whole ms uwp concept is a huge waste of a lot of people's time. Like everything else they've produced over the last few years, they came up with it without even thinking about keeping their feet grounded in reality, and all they've done is take phenomenally uncreative steps (which they probably think are highly creative) in a direction that cannot possibly be the way to the future. What is currently being done by weChat and facebook is one of the potential roads to "universal" computer products. That much is obvious, because many of the roads in that direction are patently obvious -- it's just a matter of waiting to see who will get it all to come together. But that won't be ms. Their idea of "universal" is crippled by their new-found lack of vision and creativity. It's a joke, which will be swept under the carpet, within a couple of years (joining all the other dustballs they've previously hailed as the next great thing), and the people who suffer most because of this will be developers who invest their time, skills, and effort into it. Seriously, you'll do your career better by studying COBOL.

I think I will be fine. COBOL is fine until the government upgrades their mainframes then your out of those jobs and so goes windows XP out the window as well. If you watch ZDNet newsletters or MSN news closely, the mainframes for the nuclear launch systems are being replaced so COBOL will not be used as much anymore. On another note, this is the same talk as windows ME/2000 to XP (i.e. it sucks, too ugly, etc.) which was general Banta fodder and does not talk about the nice improvements at all (i.e. Task Scheduler was great but windows 7 was the best, minimal install footprint for what we were offered, etc.). Anyways, would anyone want me to post articles on it? I am thinking posting an article despite codeplex shutting down. A lot of it is easy and I have a custom folder path/file based on date created in my current app (i.e. April 24 translates to this file path ..\archives\April\24\{name of item searched for}.csv or whatever extension you want). So, I plan on helping out anyone wanting to take the path of UWP. I am trying to pass Iprogress status in a UWP class library or dll to my main which I do everything out of and so far I cannot seem to get it to work. P.S. if your wanting to avoid UWP I believe they are still having the developer program for publishing non-UWP apps to the windows store (aka windows only apps). If your a

If I post some code here and articles would people be interested in UWP? I have some file API's and sample code that could help people. To be honest, I like UWP file operations but they are slightly weird. At the same time have great ways to do chain folder/file creation operations which I like and you can create the simple Append to end of sub/function like before but its a little different then before. Note: 1. I understand peoples problems with windows 10 updates but I have not had any problems with my updates with the exception of office 2010 because its so old windows will not install them properly the first time. 2.If you install visual studio at all, remember to install the Hypervisor for windows first because it uses that to test windows phone apps and needs time to run before you install studio.

    J jeffery c

I like windows 10 but people have to release some things about it: 1. You can get the enterprise version for free from college and block updates for up to a few months by default. Go to settings->update->advanced settings and check the defer feature updates which usually blocks most updates. I've tested it and it works. 2. I like to use the open in internet explorer option in Edge to have websites open in windows 10 fine that opened fine in windows 7 (I have experienced this problem too of edge not properly loading websites but it does not stop me from using windows 10). 3. Programming wise, I have started figuring out UWP which is a pain but workarounds do exist. File operations are close to what your used to with StreamReader and StreamWriter in dotnet with some changes (the async operations are a pain but quite pleasant once you figure them out). 4. Class shell is available but with some basic hacks or organization, I like the start menu. I really have to give them a star for the search bar because once Cortana is disabled your start menu looks faster for items. 5. Disable Cortana and diagnostic data if you prefer to stay silent in what you send Microsoft (i.e. I did disable Cortana at first because during certain actions she sends data to Microsoft such as news preferences then I realized I told her to retrieve that). Looks like windows 10 is great so far. I was skeptical after windows 8 and 8.1 and the crazy programming environment but its coming along great.

  • How to get a file in subfolder in UWP?
    J jeffery c

How do I get a file in subfolder 3 levels down in UWP? It appears Microsoft wants a query to do this. I have this relative path under their applicationdata.localstate path: \archives\EvalResults2016\month here \day here\ The file in day folder is in this format monthdayitemname.csv I am retrieving from eBay or web service.

  • Microsoft: I don't want Edge. Really.
    J jeffery c

It's sad when I have to use the open with internet explorer option to get my website to display correctly. However, edge is improving especially after the last two feature updates I have noticed improvements. I still slap Microsoft by using edge for Bing points and then an hour later switch to IE mode for a website that refuses to load. Microsoft's probably like: "freeloader!" By now.

This will be the upcoming model for windows phone. So, the point is as said above in another way, it will be impossible to make a phone app with the full dot net framework now that windows 10 almost permanently uses this model for the store (they were talking about normal apps which still exist but are either considered legacy or "specialized" apps). Now, I do not know what the uwp extensions do but I'm sure they add functionality not given. I'll rise a ticket in visual studio or other support for bringing back serialization for uwp.

It's not too bad. They need it to support XML serialization though so projects can be ported instead of the change data contract type stuff. I was trying to port the eBay source code over to uwp but the XML serialization stuff drives me crazy. If you need help I will try and give it. File system and all that is pretty much the same as windows 8.1 with a few changes that's why a simple app or one with rest API code might be possible but its a little hard because serialization is messed up if you need XML.

I am a uwp dev. If you've done windows 8.1 apps or wpf it might be easier. Definitely if you've done windows 8.1 apps. I prefer desktop apps as the full dot net framework has more support. Performing rest http requests are very similar on uwp but you need to have that stream referenced correctly or you could have memory leaks? Maybe the Microsoft guys on their support forum are confusing me a little.

In addition, the new visual studio ISO is so big that you might corrupt windows if you install incorrectly (at minimum a messed up registry and reinstall visual studio but worst case you need to reinstall windows). I was surprised how long the visual studio installation took.

Have you tried reinstalling from scratch/iso? I had a problem with the windows 10 upgrade once and downloaded the ISO at a relatives to be sure. I was right and it was a problem with the upgrade. P.S. As far as getting to IP settings did you right click the connection->network and sharing center? which shows a interface like the windows 7 one? I prefer that compared to the settings app non-sense. You have to use settings app for certain settings while most of the important ones are in network and sharing center.

Has anyone been in the swag bucks influencer program? I am was thinking about signing up for it since I have a blog. Usually about every week or two I post an entry unless I am performing a task or have family troubles. What does everyone recommend if I use this program? Note: usually these type of blog posts are separate from the ones I post here on code project.
