I don't have a problem with a government paying for necessary governmental functions, like the military. That is not forced redistribution from one person to another. As a matter of fact the US federal government is based solely on the constitution. That is the document that limits the role of the federal government; the courts determine whether any law is acceptable based upon whether it falls within the limits the constitution specifies. All laws must be constitutional or they may be struck down. In fact that was the argument that allowed obamacare to slip through; the supreme court determined that it was only allowed because it taxed people that didn't purchase insurance - the requirement to purchase insurance would have been unconstitutional.

I guess my big question is why does any government feel it has the right to redistribute anyone's money. The US constitution limits the federal government's spending to regulating commerce, providing for defense (army, navy, etc), post offices, and a few other things. So, again what gives a government the right to create a welfare state, and take money from some people and give it to others?

Somebody needs to use their intelligence to make those decisions; I sure don't see many governments making good decisions. It is your right if you want "your" money going to "undesirables", just as it is my right to have my money going to anyone I want.

I like to redistribute my wealth, and I think I do a good job of it. It makes me feel good to provide benefit to someone that I think deserves assistance. I hate it when the government redistributes my wealth (socialism), I don't think they do a good job of it. It makes me feel bad when I see that my redistributed wealth goes to people that neither need, deserve or appreciate it.

  • Building Your Own Home?
    J Jim SS

I've bought new homes where you pick from a set of plans, and choose your colors, carpets, cabinets, etc. I've also had an architect draw custom plans, contracted a builder, and participated in some of the easier parts of construction. Contracting took a lot more work, but the cost wasn't much different. However, it's hard to find a builder to do custom homes if the price isn't significantly above the mid range of local home prices.

You are so right. Spoil them rotten, then send them home. You're faster than me. we took 10 days to decide, and 3 months to get married. However, I don't recommend that for everyone, especially not my kids.

I saw post about upcoming nuptials and started thinking about how long I've been married. Our anniversary was last week and we've been married 33 years. Still rolling with the punches, but I've definitely enjoyed being married a lot more than not. BTW, kids have made it even better (after you get over raising them).

  • How much of a pay cut would you be willing to take?
    J Jim SS

The only job I have really liked was when I was working for myself (contracting and selling software I wrote). I've liked a lot of the projects, but management too often gets in the way of enjoying being in the office. Different management can make work a lot more (or less) tolerable. If they don't make up the hit in pay soon enough, you can always go find another job. Really the only work that satisfies me is when I'm working on my own or with friends on a startup idea in my spare time.

Bambi tends to have a gamey flavor, elk is much more like beef. Plus the scope and longer distance round helps because I'm too noisy to get close.

Exactly. I have some Jewish ancestry, so that's kind of sensitive, but my pride of being a submariner trumps everything else.

I have a small collection also, but what is important is that you can use what you have effectively. A semi-auto with 30 rounds might be effective at holding off a bunch of thugs trying to hurt my family, but a bolt action larger bore with a scope might be more effective at providing dinner when the supermarkets run out of food.

  • How long in one place?
    J Jim SS

6 years at the last place was the longest, but previously worked 5 years as an employee then 6 more as a contractor for the same company. Does that really count as 11 years for the same company, especially since i contracted for other companies at the same time and ran my own business?

  • Interesting site (Civil War photos).
    J Jim SS

I thought some of those pictures looked familiar. I lived in Fredericksburg about 25 years ago. There was still visible damage to existing homes that dates back to the civil war. I know people say the war was not about slavery, but I still find it amazing that such a large number of people died because some people couldn't accept that fact that all men are created equal.

  • What stops you from telecommuting ?
    J Jim SS

I did for about 10 years. Much more efficient, got to see my kids ballgames, take my kids to school, eat lunch with my wife every day. Some companies have a problem with telecommuting primarily because the managers have difficulty managing when they can't see the employees. There's also the problem of getting your employees to work 10-12 hours a day when you can't see them. But if you can get 12 hours work done in 8 hours they still want you to work more. Sweatshop is the best description I can give.

  • Is this a coding horror?
    J Jim SS

I like it. But why make it a function. Since it is just a single line, just leave it in place and you don't waste time with a function call. Only if called in several places does it need to be a function. But, I have friends that tell people that I can (and am willing to) write a whole program on a single line. :-D
