Windows search kind of works when you know how it works and either change the index or how you ask to get results, you shouldn't have to do this! Plus, you can't trust the results as it quite often misses results!

So I opened a DOS box and did dir *XYZ*.* /s and it came up with about 25 matches in 1/1000th the time it took Windows Search to say it found nothing.

Same here, I use DOS or Visual Studio - always finds what I want.

You remember Prime? Wow! My dad used to work for them in their Engineering department and then he moved to Kuwait for a few years as their sales person in the GCC particularly at the Petroleum companies. You're one of three that I have ever heard of that knows of Prime. I'm genuinely impressed.

I did work experience at Huddersfield University in the early 90's and they had a few Prime's and VAX's in their IT department - I didn't get to play with them though, but they looked impressive back then!

  • Do I need Vista as developer?
    J jlwarlow

I'm using Vista 64 Enterprise at work and have done over the last year. I've only had a few blue screens. The rest of the time its worked perfectly. At home I have Vista 64 Ultimate on my laptop. Other than network card drivers not being installed as part of the OS install, it too has worked fine.

    J jlwarlow

There was 1 5 star review with many negative comments a few seconds ago. This single review has now been deleted as of 14:59BST, so that's no reviews of spore on Amazon.co.uk. I now cannot trust the review system since its obviously censored.

  • About the evolution of Windows Search...
    J jlwarlow

Vista search is pants. It's not intuitive and hardly finds the files I'm after. If I search by name, quite often is says zero results. I find using dos dir name /s/b is quicker and always finds the file. If I search inside a file for text, vista search is slow and quite often doesn't find the file I'm after, for searching inside files I use devstudio. Search in Vista is a backwards move. At least in XP search by name and search inside files were handled differently. In vista they're handled the same, and badly.

It did start off evil with their "Everything you submit via Chrome belongs to us" EULA: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/09/03/google_chrome_eula_sucks/[^] But they later changed it, so a little less evil now.

  • Do you use dual Monitor for Coding
    J jlwarlow

I have a 17" Dell Monitor and a Sony Bravia; the Bravia was for the XBox, but I rigged it up as a 2nd monitor for my PC. I do most of my work on the main screen and keep my email, things to do, output etc on the widescreen bravia. I'd find it counter productive to go back to single monitor.

40D, excellent! I'll keep my 400D for quite a while I think. Mine came with the 18-55 canon lens, I've just bought the 90-300. I like the zoom but I am finding the minimum of 90 makes it hard to take photo's of closer subjects. If I ever manage to afford a 20D or 40D I'll keep my 400D and then I've got two bodies for two different lenses.

Very true. Also, when you get past a certain point in MPixel's, the optics play more of a role: upping the pixel count doesn't improve the picture quality, you need to start investing in decent lenses. I have a Canon 400D and at the moment the camera is capable of producing photo's of better quality than I'm currently capable of taking, so for now the 400D is all I need.
