First off, you definitely should go to a doctor. Swelling is one thing, discoloration is another. When I've hurt a toe on the mat, I usually take some ibuprofen to reduce the swelling and wrap tape around the offending toe and the largest adjacent toe. It really helps to keep it in place. Use a liberal amount of tape so it's nearly impossible to wiggle and you should be fine. - John

Ahhh. TiVo... I quiver with delight just thinking about it. I got mine about a year ago and I absolutely love it. I've been thinking of hacking it and beefing up the drives. Assuming you haven't already, you might want to check out: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/ http://www.tivofaq.com/hack/ I wish that some of the systems available now were available when I got mine. There's a company that sells TiVos with huge drives, NICs and a web brower that allows you to connect to your TiVo and program it remotely. Sigh... Enjoy your new machine and remember to sleep every once in a while. - John

  • Filter HTML Content Before Displaying in WebBrowser
    J John Hurrell

Thanks a lot Stephane. The two articles you posted will do the trick I think. I don't like the first because I believe it's inappropriate to globally modify IE settings. What if my app crashes and the changes don't get "undone." I wasn't aware of the NavigateComplete2 bug in .NET but that would definitely explain why my modifications were not being reflected in the HTML in the browser. If you were to write a browser application that would allow users to create customized filtering rules, would you utilize the hooking techniques in your articles or is there a different approach? - John

  • Filter HTML Content Before Displaying in WebBrowser
    J John Hurrell

I need to write a .NET MDI web browser that supports content filtering but I don't quite know where to start. I would like to filter content before it is displayed in the WebBrowser control but I don't know the best practice for doing this. I want to change the HTML to remove links to sounds, Flash animations, images and whatever else is defined by the user. It doesn't look as though any of the WebBrowser events will work. Same with the MSHTML DOM events. Should I be doing this even farther up-stream? Perhaps using a proxy server object and filtering the content there? - John

  • Measuring Programmer Productivity
    J John Hurrell

This is a terrible idea. Measuring only one metric takes the whole process of software engineering out of context. Developer A might code 80 LOC/Hour but have 100 defects/KLOC. Developer B might code 50 LOC/Hour but have 2 defects/KLOC. Who's more productive?

  • White House report on Sadam Hussein
    J John Hurrell

I think that the rest of the world has adpoted the "it isn't happening in my back" yard mentality. I have friends in China and they have said issues in other countries are none of their business. As Americans, we believe it IS our business. Other countries have faulted us for thinking that we WERE the world but I see us as more clearly recognizing that we're part of the world and attrocities against others are an attrocity against all. Just my two cents. That is one hell of an interesting report. Makes the case to eliminate him pretty convincing.

  • WorkPlace Ethics
    J John Hurrell

I don't work there, but I know people who do. For those who don't know, Paychex is a payroll and accounting company based in Rochester, New York USA. It's run by an ego-maniac named Tom Galisano who has lost bids for Governor. Anyway, here are some of the rules that I've heard from this jail: - Women cannot wear slacks... skirts and dresses only. - Men must wear white shirts. - Blinds must be adjusted so they slant at same angle and must always be fully closed (no bare glass). - No personal pictures or other articles. - If you wear boots to work in the winter, you must change into dress shoes and place boots in desk drawer. I could not imagine working for a company like that. How do you respect a business that has wastes so much energy coming up with and enforcing this crap? -John "You don't love a woman because she is beautiful. • What's your personality type?
    J John Hurrell

It's funny you posted this because I just took this a few days ago. I've taken this a number of times over the last 10 years and my type has never changed. Each time I take it, I expect it to change because I simply cannot believe that I answer the questions the same each time. Apparently, this test is very consistent because it relates the questions to each other to determine your type. It doesn't just count your answers. -John "You don't love a woman because she is beautiful. She is beautiful because you love her." - Anonymous
