  • What's the catch?
    J Jonathan Austin

Erick Sgarbi wrote: ComponentOne Studio I thought I would say what I believe to be the catch on the ComponentOne stuff. I was really excited last night and downloaded it as soon as it came up. First off, it is the full version with the license and all. It is their Q3 03 version. They released 4 packages a year. What you receive with the Resource Kit is only a single quarter whereas with the subscription, you get updates throughout the year. With the Resource Kit version, you have to buy a subscription at $599 to get all of the new versions including bug fixes. They are already into the fixes in Q4. This is good and bad. You can use them in projects and distribute them all that you want. The bad news is that if you get into a project using these controls and come up on a show-stopping bug, you have to buy the subscription. I really want to use some of their Winforms controls in an app that I'm writing but I'm not sure how stable all of their components are. I'd be interested to hear from anybody that knows the stability and the frequency of serve bugs in the C1 suite. Jonathan

  • Cafepress and Golf Shirts
    J Jonathan Austin

I know that some of you have purchased things from Cafepress in the past. I am interested in their Golf Shirts. I would like to get my company logo on them, but I'm unsure of the quality. I noticed that Codeproject doesn't have the Golf Shirt list in their store, but I thought maybe someone would of ordered one from a different store. How is the printing? I'm assuming that it is screen-printed. Does it look decent enough to be professional? Thanks, Jonathan

  • Looking for an RTF Control.
    J Jonathan Austin

Joey Bloggs wrote: I've been thinking about extracting the text engine out of abiword or even better yet getting them to do it! I've also been trying to find a GOOD RTF control, mostly for .NET. This is interesting that you mention checking out an open source word processor. That never really crossed my mind. After I read your post, I went to the abiword site and it appears that the license is GPL which pretty much messes up most any projects other than open-source ones. After finding that out, I went over to the OpenOffice site and it appears that their source code is LGPL. This would allow you to use it in a non-GPL'ed project. Maybe someone could look into that project instead. I'm not very good at C/C++ but might check it out. Just thought I would toss that out there. -Jonathan

  • How Do You Bid a Website Design?

Roger Wright wrote: They're on a grant - it's a non-profit - and the money has to be spent in 6 weeks or they lose it. There's your answer. Find out how much the grant is and get close to it. :) That's assuming that dollar amount isn't $500. Otherwise, I was once told to figure how many hours you think it's going to be and multiply by 3. That way you will cover yourself. Sometimes, this may put you over quickly, but it's a guide. I typically figure how many hours and then multiply it by $65/hour. If I like the dollar amount I will go with it otherwise I will adjust. I also basis it on their ability to pay.

  • Tape to digital conversion
    J Jonathan Austin

My dad rigged up a tape deck and hooked the speakers up to the LINE-IN of his sound card. He then turned them into MP3s. I think he may of gotten a Y-cable from Radio Shack. He used MusicMatch to do most of this. I think that the MusicMatch site describes some of this. He did some tapes, but he mainly wanted to do vinyl records.

  • Microsoft & VirtualPC
    J Jonathan Austin

As many of you probably know, Microsoft bought Connectix at the beginning of February. Connectix is the maker of the VirtualPC and a competitor of VMWare. After April 15th, Microsoft takes over completely. I am wondering what the possibility of VirtualPC getting included into MSDN is? Has anybody heard anything? Is this the type of thing they would add? It is of course a great development tool so it would make since. Any comments? Jonathan

  • Send Email to a Bunch of People
    J Jonathan Austin

I'm looking for a program that will allow me to send out an email to a bunch of people. It would be super nice if it was free. I need it to send out an email to each individual email address because free email accounts like Hotmail thinks that it is spam if the user's email doesn't appear in the TO:. I am of course not going to send spam. I need to send it out to a bunch of my users (~1500 emails). I could write something up in .NET but I'd be interested in any other recommendations. I've searched and searched online but everything is targeted at sending out marketing messages. Thanks, Jonathan

  • Safari Tech Books
    J Jonathan Austin

Has anyone used the Safari Tech Books Online provied online by O'Reilly? They offer technical books online for $9.99 a month. You get 5 slots a month. http://safari.oreilly.com/[^] It also seems that DevX has partnered with them too. You can get the same deal for $9.99 a month but you also get some other things with it. http://archive.devx.com/free/premierclub/premierclub.asp[^] Does anybody have any experience with it? I know some people do not like reading on a computer. I do not think that it will be too big of a problem for me. It may even provide a good way to "preview" the books before buying them. Jonathan Can you believe it? A non-Iraq, non-war, non-cricket post!

  • Online purchases and sales tax?
    J Jonathan Austin

Companies are suppose to charge Sales Tax in any state in which they have a presence. It does not just have to be the H.Q. I'm sure that BestBuy has a retail store in almost every state. I'm sure that this is also the case with place like Walmart.com. As C.L. said, most states (VA is mine) probably have a form that you're suppose to fill out reporting all mail-order purchases. In VA, it's called a Use Tax and you're suppose to pay 4.5% on those purchases. I don't know a single person who does it.

    J Jonathan Austin

Well, since I read it, I'll comment on a few of your things, though it didn't take me quite two hours to read it. :) * LONG POST David Wulff wrote: I was very surprised about the whole banking thing - can anyone back that up?! Yes. I have "online" banking. I can only transfer between the same accounts at my bank. I have to "own" both accounts. In addition, my transactions do not show up live in my online banking. For instance, if you go to the bank (which also has a drive-through) and make a transaction, it won't be updated on your online banking until that night around midnight. And that's assuming you get it to the bank before 2PM (in my case). There are some other banks that update their accounts faster. He is absolutely correct when he talks about the bill paying. They will actually print and mail a check for you. David Wulff wrote: Americans don't have teletext? Nope. I didn't really know what it was until he described it. In my area, there are only about 3-4 channels that you can get without paying for it (cable/digital television). You get the little TV Schedule listing only when you sign up for the paid stuff. Sport scores, stock prices. All of that we have things like ESPN and CNBC but you have to wade through the commericals. Use the Internet for those things. David Wulff wrote: What about the washing machine statement? Here I just bung the clothing in, tell it the basic cycle and come and collect my dried clothing in about two hours ready for ironing. Here we have two seperate machines for washing and drying. The wash cycle is about 25-30 minutes and the dry cycle is probably about 60 minutes (on a home dryer). Not too sure how it compares since I have no basis. David Wulff wrote: On the other side, air conditioning has always puzzeled me - just what do you use it for? Surely all of the country can't suffer form heat waves? I thought that was funny how Germans (and Europe?) don't expect A/C. I don't really know what is considered hot to you all. During the summertime, it will get about 85 degrees (F) on a typical July day. I'm in Southern Virginia which is about halfway down on the east coast. It gets a lot warmer as you go south for longer periods of time. I'm sure that it's because we've become use to it. It's a common saying around here that spending too much time in the A/C will ruin you when you decide to go outside and do some

  • Backup Mail Server
    J Jonathan Austin

Does anybody have any good recommendation for a backup mail server that I can put in my DNS? It appears that last night, my web host/mail provider got hacked and it somehow brought down the whole operating system. They had to reformat and rebuild the system. They lost my whole website, but I think that is going to be able to be restored from backup (I have it of course). I don't think they are going to be able to restore my MAIL that was received onto the mail server from 1AM (EST) until whenever it went down this morning. Also, I'm sure tons my mail has been bouncing. So that's my explaination and rant about that issue. Not too happy, though they have been rather up front about it. Thanks, Jonathan
