I very much regret that I cannot help you there. In one of those serendipitous moments I became aware of the quote a couple of days ago when it was used on a UK TV Discussion Show, slightly misquoted and wrongly attributed, although I was not aware of that at the time. When I saw the OP, it reminded me of the quote, so, to be sure to give the correct attribution etc. I googled for 'counting the spoons'. Long story short it led me to this site[^] where a search gave me the correct wording and attribution (in the TV Show it was attributed to Lord Chesterfield).
