I'm not sure how it works in the UK, but in California there are web services such as indeed and dice.com that work very well at posting local jobs. But don't listen to me. I got a job via indeed and it sucks big time.

Does that ever happen? Even after collage?

Where's the exitI was really banking on the swine flu outbreak to thin the ranks of the elderly inheritance holders - just my luck that it's cured with 7up and chicken soup.

Where's the exitSo having a degree in computer science is not enough to get a teaching credential in the US? Would I have to get an english or mather major to teach? Well, that sure as hell cuts out teaching as a career. No way am I going back to school.

Where's the exitThat's just the kind of advice I was looking for - thanks. There is no question that being burn out and unmotivated not only effects your personal and family life, but it also effects your work life as well (wow - what a brainstorm to figure that one out). If I keep on at this place, it's really only a matter of time before they find and younger and cheaper person to do the job that I can barely motivate myself to do. Multiple streams of income might be a possibility, if I only could get the folks to pass away...

Where's the exitI’ve been browsing the CP forum for a while now and consider you all a thoughtful and intelligent bunch, so I would appreciate your opinions. I have been in the software business for 25 years now and have been involved in every aspect of software. I have coded plenty (started with UCSD Pascal and now do Java). I have managed large programming teams, been a project manager for high pressure consultant firms (during the .COM years), worked as a self employed contractor, was a partial owner of a successful startup, and now do development for laboratory Robotic systems. It all sounds great, but the truth is, I’m burned out. I’m currently under-employed at a mismanaged, thoroughly dull company and I want out of this game. I considered all my career options (short of retirement) and what I would really like to do is teach computer programming to high school kids. Only problem.. the pay stinks. There is no way that I could support my family on the $30,000 a year that a high school teacher makes. Any ideas?

Should I Quit Programming?I agree - sometimes everyone tries to be too damn polite

The "green" lieThe last company I worked at tried very hard to pose as a “Green” company. To do this, they had a bunch of solar panels on the roof that powered some refrigerators and used recycled water for the landscaping. At the same time, they had a “cradle to grave” policy for all computers, which meant that all computers needed to be tracked from purchase to destruction. No computers were ever donated, and I watched them send brand new computers, in the box, straight into the landfill. In addition, they were a biotech company, and the amount of waste that is generated by biotech is astounding! When a company claims it’s “green”, it usually doesn’t mean much.

Late for work? How about, "I no longer care about this job". I almost used that one once... almost.
