It name now serves as a differentiator between "real WP 8.1" and "WP Silverlight 8.1" apps :) so I think this is the last time we see Silverlight name, now that W 8.1 and WP 8.1 share the same core finally. We should be working on business apps for Windows 8.1, Silverlight as we knew it (web hosted) is dead

Silverlight Status -
I'm still angry with Microsoft.I used to think like that, what a letdown was such a decision, since then I'm full time focused on WP and W8 so I could reuse skills, and fortunately I got a job where I can just do that. Now I have a different perspective because I believe the very reasons Microsoft droped Silverlight were: 1. They were not winning against HTML as web platform standard 2. For XAML/C# to win as a UI platform everywhere they have to aim for native apps first, starting from their own flagship product: Windows 3. The HTML strategy in W8 is to attract web developers and eventually they will end up developing more native apps than web apps. I think at the end of the day HTML can't beat native in any platform, think Phonegap for example, so I think Microsoft is not joining the web standards completely, they are supporting native apps and while doing so they are empowering their own platform and others so web use in mobile is coming to an end subtly. I think that's more clever than being stubborn about Silverlight. And by the way, I believe they are supporting Xamarin heavily because of this, supporting native we all win  The people saying HTML is the future, well, they are already living in the past in my opinion :)

Is this common everywhere?Absolutely, I agree, you know I'm a Microsoft shop not because I can't learn other things or because I'm a MS fanatic (that in part I should but not too much, I can be a critic too), it is because it offers the enough support for developers than anyone out there (in my opinion) and because specializing I can offer added knowledge value and be ahead of competition. And yes I face anti-Microsoft practices everyday while looking for a project there are people who just don't know enough about technology and what you can do with it, there are people open minded who are willing to listen options but there are others that simply won't because you are saying Microsoft. The way I deal with it is presenting real world software that was made using MS technology, and when they see something they didn't see before they say wow I want that :)

Microsoft Gone WildRazor makes non sense? is not MS's PHP at all, is just another view engine to make things simpler, but under the hood is ASP.net as is MVC, I think they are investing even more in the ASP.net platform than ever before, why would they lose faith in ASP.net as I said everything is still over ASP.net, about WebMatrix is not just a simple GUI is for starter developers or professionals who wants to deliver quick solutions, its nice because you can edit most of your solutions in Visual Studio so its just a complement to make RAD even simpler for those who want to quickly get started in out of the box solutions, so WM targets very specific market and is a lot better than iWeb or similars

,NET to PHP -
,NET to PHPBecause they are comited to free software and PHP gets well with MySQL and Linux :)

,NET to PHPWell tell him Facebook is not all running in PHP, actually is a custom PHP with a dozen of technologies behind the front end (that is php) facebook is not good because of php but because all there is behind it php is just a mere face in the facebook :)

Facebook has more bugs than a bait shopThat's what the JavaScript cancer has left on his path, before making a new html spec there should be first a whole new JS spec like 2.0, JS hurts industry more than anythig it has like 15 years old damn

They need the correct version of .NET installed (can be nightmares here), the correct version of the Silverlight client installed for testing and that's it AFAIK.
It's not .net framework its a plugin just like flash, if the client does not have it, can download through automated generated button
Todd Smith wrote:
Trying to install the client on various browsers can be hit or miss.
You only install ONCE, not for every browser
Todd Smith wrote:
I don't know what kind of issues if any the various 3rd party controls might cause including the MS Silverlight Toolkit
No issues, toolkit assemblies copies on the output XAP file get informed please

LAMP vs .NETI have programmed using LAMP and I can say is a hell to do somehing with it when you come from the .NET world along with Visual Studio, simply there is no way the development tools there can beat what has been built and matured from the begining by MS, for the starters there is MS dreamspark to get started on big league however not many people know about it or even express editions, if its about startups there is MS dreamspark or webspark but very few people know about it, so I think people who choses LAMP is only for the comodity of the $0 price tag but you get what you pay for, the most of people chose LAMP because the most of websites are just basic CMS or company profile sites, not really something that involves high tech custom systems, its so sad people base technology decisions on the price of the OS, that is the only thing that si hard to find for free from MS but anyone can do .NET development really but only underground people that are not statistics know about it but these people do very good money with it :)

ASP.NET life remainingI hate so say but as much as I would like to use only Silverlight I need ASP.NET for plenty of things one of them is authentication, I think Silverlight will be on top of ASP.NET like forever but hope ASP.NET turns into more a platform or mid-tier or something and keep the front-end thingies for Silverlight but for that to happen I think SL needs like to be installed on 99% of PCs and Macs and Linuxes :(

How do I manage a small dev team with a large number of small projectsOh you only need TFS 2010 that's it
-
Use of low tech tools when it comes to programming [modified]with VSTS 2010 Visual Studio will be our board! lol cool new features for UML however a nice really big white board is a must always before going for the mouse and keyboard
-
Team Server tips?Yeah for VSTS 2008 you need 32 bit app tier but you can have 64 bit data tier, that changes on VSTS 2010 is 64 bit compatible cool!
-
Team Server tips? It's free you know lol well for startups as me but if you really want to use it get yourself a MSDN subscription and is free, or get yourself an Action Pack being a registered Microsoft partner and comes free too
-
Team Server tips?Oh and... You will bang your head on the wall several times before you successfully install it, but is our mistake, you have to read the setup manual very carefully and do as it says no more no less and you are set to go I have installed it about 6 times with no mistakes but the first install went about 5 tries all day work, you first understand Active Directory, understand Sharepoint and Reporting Services and then you can install TFS
-
Team Server tips?BTW you cant install it on Windows 7 you need Windows Server
