Thanks I'm having a play with this - I like that I can hide the sections for projects, like the Repos since we wouldn't use them. It looks like this could be pared back to what we would want... will have to get the boss to look at it too. Still maybe not so keen on the info not being 'in house' so to speak - the advantages of working 'in the cloud' aren't that strong for me. EDIT - Ah! I see there is there 'Server' and the 'Services' so we can keep it in house. Are they otherwise the same?

We are looking for a simple issue tracking system to improve the formality/structure of our bug reporting / fixing / testing cycle. We don't really need anything complicated like SLA management, time spent on issue, milestones etc. Things we would like: - somewhere to describe the issue - somewhere to describe the fix - a basic priority for the issue - a basic classification for the issue (e.g., documentation issue, bug, feature request) - ability to search the issue/fix database - record who fixed the issue, and when - record who tested the fix, and when - SVN integration would be nice (but somewhere to record the commits related to the fix would do) Most of the things we've looked at so far are way more complicated (and/or expensive) than we require (we have 2.5 devs and 1 support person, developing a very complex, niche technical product with a 20+yr old code-base), but I'm interested to know what others are using (especially if you are in a small team). Cheers.

  • Win10 Hiding Tray Icons
    K Kyudos

Yes...it doesn't seem to matter what I set the visibility settings to, the only thing that makes a difference to the tray is the showing/hiding of system icons. Does it depend on something else I wonder? I have all the 'extra' taskbar things turned off and/or uninstalled (toolbars, taskview, people, search, Cortana, OneDrive, all the system icons, bar volume), I'm also running Classic Shell and UltraMon with extra taskbars on my secondary monitors.

Thanks, I had a look but I don't like it much - unnecessarily flashy and doesn't reduce the desktop size properly

  • Win10 Hiding Tray Icons
    K Kyudos

I'm all Googled out on this one - the Win10 settings that are supposed to hide your tray icons don't work on my new machine. I can hide or show system icons, like the volume control, but application icons will not hide. No matter what I do, I can't get the system tray expansion area to appear. Any one else had this and figured it out?

Thanks for the reply...I appreciate that you can do this, but separating it from the taskbar was the main part of the functionality I missed :)

  • Win10 App Launcher Alternative
    K Kyudos

I still miss side-dockable app-launch toolbars on Windows 10. I've been looking for alternatives - I don't want fancy scrolly Mac-ish 'docks' I just want to be able to launch apps and open locations from an unobtrusive bar docked to the side of my desktop. You know - like you used to be able to... Any recommendations?

  • Getting the official Microsoft word on something?
    K Kyudos

Yes - but that doesn't really help. The best I could do would be to refuse to install or give some kind of warning if the bitness of Office doesn't match the bitness of the host app - it doesn't solve the underlying problem.

There is no problem matching bitity of host and plugin - the problem arises when that bitity is not matched by the installed version of Office. Not many people use 64-bit Office, so people using 64-bit host are likely to have 32-bit Office.

It's a plugin - if they have a 64-bit version of the host app, they need a 64-bit version of our product. Of course, we will have a 32-bit version too, but forcing the user to acquire a different 'bit-version' of the host app isn't ideal. Inevitably they will tend to ignore the requirement, and then complain about our app 'not working'. It would all have been academic if Microsoft hadn't made their drivers mutually exclusive...

I wish! It'd be our app that fails, which means they ring us...

It's a consumer app - it'll be on people's machines with their whatever-version of Office. If they happen to have 64-bit Office (unlikely) it'll all work OK, but if they have our 64-bit plugin, and 32-bit Office (more likely) its a potential problem.

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this but... I'm developing a 64-bit app that interfaces with Access databases, which works fine with the 64-bit ACE drivers. However, due to some inexplicable co-mingling, you can't have 32-bit and 64-bit Access drivers existing on the system without 'tricking' Windows. This also works fine, until Windows update 'fixes' your trickery, forcing your 32-bit Office installation to repair itself and break your 64-bit drivers. Some solutions are obvious, but stupid (switch to SQL, turn off Windows Update, force users to use 64-bit Office...) and I'd like to get Microsoft's official recommendation. They're going to make me pay for that aren't they?

Using opendns.com you can probably do some better filtering, but of course that is fairly easily avoided by setting 8.8.8.8 as the DNS (does he/she know how to do that?)

Thankfully, he doesn't know that yet! I'll look into OpenDNS I think. I'm under no illusions about being able to 'protect' him for long, but hopefully I can keep him from accidental exposure for a while longer...

  • Net Nanny?
    K Kyudos

Having a very curious and tech-savvy eight-year-old at home, I'm thinking it's about time I added an extra layer of protection to my web connection. Although most of his computer time is supervised, he is more than capable of using the smart TV etc., so I was thinking of adding a whitelist/blacklist to my router. Does anyone have any experience with this? Does it work? Is it obtrusive? Other than that, what about net-nanny type software? (though I'd prefer a router solution, so I don't have to 'fix' all the connected devices)
