Just try and restart chrome. Turning things off and on usually fixes the problem.

  • Blender 3D jobs/careers/degrees?
    M Marijus Sugajevas

As a person who uses Blender at work on regualar basis I will throw my 2 cents into the mix. Before you start searching for jobs, have a chat with your son. Work out what exactly he does in Blender and what part of that process he enjoys the most. There are number of type of 3D artists: Generalist (most freelancers), Animator, Concept atrist, VFX, Character creator, asset creator and so on. All equally important in a big company to deliver a final product. But, please, start with good college. This will give him theoretical knowledge he lack right now, lets him experience other tools industry uses and by the end he will end up working in a small team to learn dynamic and process flow. This will gives him few years to polish and improve his portfolio. As with programming you won't win the job in C++ with CV oriented in VB, in 3D world if you apply for concept artist position, do not bother with your assets or characters: focus on concepts. My specialisation is Architectural Visualization as I have years of experience in AutoCad, 3DMax, Blender and now Revit. I can't stand character creation/animation, but can spend hours finetuning perfect shot for new building.

Re-design start with Photoshop(design), not HTML. While you at it, don't forget books on CSS, PHP and other web-related abbreviations. Don't worry, it's just like riding a bike... after few falls you will be back on track in no time.

  • How accurate are the emulators?
    M Marijus Sugajevas

You need very big budget to get every possible device to try on and make sure your app works. There is always another option: Ask for a helping hand from buddys (pals) in CodeProject. If you have some doubts about code leaking to the wrong hands - just make it time-limited or other limited in other ways. I have Samsung Galaxy Portal (Android 2.1). Thinking to get something bigger like WeTab or Dell Streak. Other might have other devices, like Droid (w/ Froyo), HTC Desire, Google, HTC Legend and so on. If you planing to make your application for only one device and software is proprietary to the company/project and no sharing is allowed (my case) - then you have no other choice but to get that device. Whichever the case - I'm more that happy to help fellow programmer by loading software on the phone and writing report on it. Even simple "Yep, It works.." or "Nope, fatal disaster." sometimes is helpful. The most important part - enjoy your path to enlightenment. Nothing can beat real sense of achievement.

  • How many of you actually have technically intelligent management
    M Marijus Sugajevas

Especially in UK. :^) I worked in 3rd world countries (not in Africa yet :) ) and I know that if management is not stupid they are always very keen to new technologies as long as it increases productivity and performance. True that it’s harder to beat up some money from the budget but still they try to use latest tech. Here in UK I noticed more of the attitude like: “this code worked for 10 years, let not touch it” or “Windows 98 OS is the best one from MS ever”. It their defence I must say that there are some strong points: VB6 application is not as big and chunky as .NET. (…but users now are more comfortable with Vista style interface…) No windows OS will ever beat DOS in boot-up time. (…no user will know where to go from there… no mouse or icons…) But again it all depends on who is in charge and how you present it.

  • Linux vs Win03 Server
    M Marijus Sugajevas

I walked this road five years ago. I had the same experience and I know how frustrating it is. At that time it was Debian vs Win2003. Installation and setup of Debian was not as nice at it is now. My results showed that Linux was more benefitial, optimised and better that Win2003 for my server, for what I wanted. Main keys: Faster startup & shutdown (No GUI loading). Easy to conrol and monitor (WEBMIN). More secure: No need for antivirus. Faster: again no antivirus or other strange services running in background Faster transfers.(Still don't know why, but 20% faster). More stable. Crash of one program does not afect whole system. Cheaper: £0 compare to (what it was at that time). Minus: Only PostScipt (PS) type printers, like HP. To be fair: It all depends on what you want. All I needed is small black box in the corner that does its thing... NO monitor mouse or keyboard... for the same things as you: PHP, MySQL.. Well maybe some e-mail fetching and proxy. If you want GUI - say so in the beginning. For what you want GUI will only be in the way. Besides there are great tools to monitor and control your Linux box via Browser, like WEBMIN: http://www.webmin.com/[^] Give it a try... and good luck. Personal opinion: I don't care if it's Win or *nix. I feel comfortable using both.

About 75-98% of all programmers I know, spend their free time with more work or something, that keeps fingers busy: Console games(Wii/PS/Arcade), Instruments(Guitar/flute), Gadgets(fixing stuff, creating stuff). The reason for that: It's a good practice for fingers and usually pleasant for others. Myself: (GameCube/PS2/PC) Gaming, Playing Guitar, Photo and 3D Rendering.. but usually - solving other people problems with IT (additional money income ;) ). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't see much difference between piano player and programmer: they both requires precision and speed of fingers. Oh.. yea.. one difference: programmer can listen to different music, while piano player, only to what he plays himself.
