I had cataracts. Dark mode was vital to my working. At that time, a white background would overwhelm the text. I've since had the surgery on both eyes and I good now.

  • The term engineer - it's getting a little loose....
    M MikeTheFid

When I started working at IBM in 1979, my job title was Field Engineer. I was neither an Engineer nor a landscaper. At some point the Engineering community complained that non-Engineers were being called Engineers. IBM changed our title to Customer Service Representative. As for Firewall Engineer, I agree. What the elephant?

  • An interesting article on the state of LLMs (and reporting bugs)
    M MikeTheFid

I suspect the source of the LLM problem described - setting aside all the "no one cares" and "I don't have a conduit to speak with anyone who might care" issues - is architectural. To make an obvious "well DUH!" statement, there are multiple components here, just in the chatbots simple Input-Process-Output structure. The issue the article author talks about could originate in any one or more of them. To me a bicameral or multicameral approach/architecture is needed. If these chatbot systems had an output monitoring AI that could "learn" to detect both garbage in and/or garbage out, that could help mitigate the issue. I'm just flying by the seat of my pants here. I am fully prepared to be wrong, and if that's the case, please be gentle. :)

  • An interesting article on the state of LLMs (and reporting bugs)
    M MikeTheFid

Exactly! One of the problems I see is that the weakest link in the chat software chain, is context apprehension and continuity across probes. To be fair, that's common amongst humans also. I'm 67 and I work with colleagues that are, on average early 30-somethings. They (almost, to be fair) never get my 60's, 70's and 80's cultural references. I don't fault them for that, however. Culturally speaking, my internal LLM has been train on datasets they've never seen. This is the common look I get: :~

Reminds me of the old "Wiffenpoof Operation." The Wiffenpoof is a mythical bird that flies in ever decreasing circles until it flies up its own a$$ and disappears. Which, oddly enough, sounds like the phenomenon described in the cited article.

It really annoys me when people don't respect the coding style they encounter while changing someone else's code. It's even worse when they run a reformatter that changes the entire file to their preferred style. I think a bunch of the style quirks like #3 came from a time where the number of lines in the file made navigation arduous. I'm looking at you ed.

I consider myself lucky to not be a character in Game of Thrones. My swordplay sucks. Like really, really bad. I'd last less than half an episode. Other than that, I don't worry about things that are beyond my control. Like the timing and manner.
