That bit about using assembler sounds like Steve Gibson, who created many products, and you may be thinking of Spinrite GRC | Hard drive data recovery software [^] I still use a number of his utilities, eg quickly log off or sleep the PC. He is also very much into internet security.

Seeking Way Back Defrag Name Assistance -
BIG Pressing NewsI've never seen (or in reality, noticed) such a long cookie-mamagement list, but had a go at deleting a few - then gave up. Allowed what was left, removed the whole set of cookies from FF and could then read at my leisure. Probably won't be going back.

Dear all, I kindly ask for your help , pleaseGuessing that word involves 'battle axe', I tried a search for 'battle axe lp', eventually found this on youtube AVALANCHE-Battle Axe Vinyl Remastered - YouTube[^] which has the words 'when the thunder roars' as a track name (not on that clip), so then searched for that phrase and 'avalanche' and found this: Avalanche - When The Thunder Roars (HQ) - YouTube[^] Is that, perchance, what you were after? Update: the LP may be 'pray for the sinner', but rather oddly, that 'thunder' track does not appear in this listing: https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/avalanche/pray-for-the-sinner/[^] but note track B4 is 'Battle Axe' - and a comment by witchtrap says "P.d: on my lp the song BATTLE AXE is named WHEN THE THUNDER ROARS. Strange"

OLED vs IPS... to 4K or not to 4K?Richard Andrew x64 wrote:
I wish I had saved the box for it, cause I've no idea what the name of the model is.
I can't quite believe I am writing this, but wouldn't you expect to find a model number on the back of the monitor somewhere, if not the front?

Connector standardI was surprised how tricky it was/is to find the info - iI believe the pin spacing is 2mm in each direction, and Farnell have info on a 20-pin, 2mm IDC receptacle: 89361-720LF Amphenol Communications Solutions, IDC Connector, IDC Receptacle, Female | Farnell UK[^] The data sheet for that shows it is made by Amphenol, drawing number 83951, title '2.00 mm IDC'. It seems obvious that this must be an industry-agreed design (dimensions, at least), or nothing would fit together, but where the spec for such standards may be found is another matter.

External Hard Drive Recoveryyes, there are a few - but it has to be the same model.
-
External Hard Drive RecoveryI have recovered data from a drive which had an obviously blown component on its control board, by replacing such board with one from an identical (near enough) drive sourced from Ebay. Less hassle than transplanting the platters (which I have never done). But if it truly is only 5GB it will be very old and almost certainly unavailable.

advising a friend re his deceased brother's iPhone 13.Am I misunderstanding something? If the bitcoin wallet is only identified on the phone, and not in the cloud (in an Apple account), then AFAIK even Apple cannot help - one needs the PIN (passcode).

The Cuckoo's Egg by Cliff Stoll, still amazingto be fair, the original link (as it appears to me) was:
CUCKOOS-EGG-Clifford-Stoll-ebook/dp/B0083DJXCM?keywords=the+cuckoo%27s+egg+by+clifford+stoll&qid=1664891518&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIxLjgxIiwicXNhIjoiMS42OSIsInFzcCI6IjEuNTcifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=the+cuckoo%27s+egg%2Caps%2C241&sr=8-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=radink-20&linkId=0bad07be838f6e2cda5f0984ff490aa3&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl
which is not a direct link to the book, but a keyword search (?). To display the above, I had to remove the leading http stuff, as this editor automatically changed it to a link, which was not what i wanted. But the UK page I got did have the keywords in the search box, and clicking on them did get me to the book: the-cuckoos-egg: Amazon.co.uk: clifford-stoll: 9780743411462: Books[^] A bit pricey! But also recommended was this: The Cuckoo's Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage: Amazon.co.uk: Stoll, Cliff: 8601200542172: Books[^] for a more reasonable price. These links with ludicrously long 'referencing' data are a pain.

Firefox Icon sizeNB: this is for Windows: I 'know' how to do it, but its complex - you have to use userChrome.css - see userChrome.css for Customizing Firefox[^] I first uncovered this via a forum I frequent, which has a whole set of pages on it: https://www.tenforums.com/browsers-email/183901-firefox-taming-beast-part-2-a.html#post2280830[^] I'm not sure if part one still exists. Warning: the .css file has many, many tweaks, and the best approach seems to me to disable all of them, and then enable one-by-one. I am using about two dozen, and could not (right now) say what they all do! I have adjusted the spacing between bookmarks (the prime motivator), and keep tabs right above the window. The tweaks have survived many FF updates, but if it ever stops working I may not bother again.

Recommendations for migrating to a new laptopOne option would be to image the old drive, then restore that image to the new laptop (having first imaged that in case it all goes to pot). You may/will have driver issues which may/can be resolved afterwards. If it works you've saved a lot of hassle, if it doesn't you at least have an image of the old setup in case you should ever need to look for something.

An interesting blockchain readI'll take back what I wrote! I was thinking of the cost to the transactee, not the cost to the world: currently $179, see Bitcoin Average Cost Per Transaction[^] One word: absurd.
-
An interesting blockchain readAs you say, the rest of the article seems well-written, but that figure of 906 kWh per transaction must be nonsense: the figure is not substantiated, and is probably referring to the cost of mining a block of transactions (~3,000 as of 2019).

Screen recording with narration- for windowsI'm sure it will amuse you even more that when I click on the first "Get" button, it opens the store (?) with a message "The thing you're looking for isn't here - we probably don't have it, but just in case, try searching for it". I gave up.
