I would highly recommend any books by Dino Esposito. He has been writting some great ASP.Net books for years now, and also speaks at all the major Microsoft events. This gets into the cluster cthulu of .net framework versioning. Going from 1 to 1.1 to 2.0 could cause problems if your application's functionality was dependent on a bug in the old version (either explictly :wtf:, or because your workaround for it didn't check for the original bug being fixed :doh:). That's a multi-part question that I won't answer in a single post. You can compare text using string.Compare, string.CompareOrdinal, or use some of the regular expression methods found in System.Text.RegularExpressions.RegEx class. That will tell you what's different. Your requirements are self excluding. You can't create a .NET application that checks to see if the .NET Framework is installed. It HAS to be installed before you launch your application, otherwise, how is it going to launch in the first place? You have two options. 1) Your installer must handle installing the .NET Framework required by your application. 2) You write a launcher application in Visual C++ (not Managed C++!!) that checks for the existance of the correct version of the .NET Framework, then if found, launches the real application, and if not, puts up a dialog telling the user to install the correct version of .NET.
