Mmm... América Móvil goes further than Mexico. It has its nose in almost every Latin American country. On the first place, this fellow has a virtual monopoly over local telephone serivce. Since Telemx was bought from the government by Slim, there hasn't been another telephone company for local calls. I mean, in 1998 or so other foreign companies (such as AT&T, Avantel and Maxcom) has made it through the long distance calls. But the problem is that since Telmex owns all the installations (i.e. the cables that communicate cities and so), all other companies have to pay for using their lines. Nowadays, the senate is debatin whether the CFE (government's electricity company) should open their lines for free so that it could be used for telephone and Internet services. Of course, Slim is pressing them so this won't come true. On the second place, Slim has tons of bussiness, not only AM. For example, this fellow owns a large chain of restaurants known as Sanborns. The main cellphone company, Telcel, is his. He owns his own bank, Inbursa. And that without mentioning his bussiness in LA and Europe. Finally, I really consider this an outrageous news. How is it possible that the world's richest man comes from and lives in a country whose 40% of population lives in poverty? No doubt, the inequality level is reaching alarmant levels. Well, my rant's over now. I think I'll go for a coffee at Sanborns... oh wait, not again...
