Microsoft, Javascript and not cutting cornersAah, one of our customers had exactly this problem on their Windows 2012 servers - some were showing "GMT Daylight" Time, others "GMT Summer Time", even though they had all been built "exactly the same" (by a third party). It's a region/locale difference, one is English (US), the other is English (United Kingdom). I think it comes from the tzres.dll.

I don't normally nitpick at spelling errors, but Beer Isle sounds like a great place for a holiday home :-)

Jumping into the Mac BandwagonLike others have said, you'll want 2Gb ideally, but you can get it far cheaper than Apple sell it for. I bought an early Intel iMac with 512Mb, then upped it to 2Gb six months later, selling the 512Mb on ebay. One thing you should upgrade is the graphics card if you're planning anything graphics intensive, as I don't believe this can be upgraded later.

New ZunesHow can the software be "all new and rewritten"? Surely it's one or the other?

RAM (or possibly something else) noise? My Dell laptop makes a high-pitched whining noise when the wi-fi is turned on. The sound of that changes as I scroll, or move the mouse around. Really annoying! I've seen references to faulty capacitors when I've hunted for information about it, but since it's mostly used at work with a network cable I've never done anything about it.

Identity theftI arrived home on Friday to find a letter from my credit card company asking me to call them urgently. After about 5 minutes of security questions (countries I'd been to recently, account balances, payments, ALL previous addresses and employers), they informed me that someone had changed the address on my account. At first I thought, "Hey, that's me, I've just moved", but then they told me it had been changed again to an address in Crawley (south of London)... I had a call back from them later in the evening and, after more security questions, they started reeling off all the places around west London where my card had been used. Needless to say, none of them were me. The account is now frozen while I wait for a fraud form to arrive. I've been shredding everything for the last couple of years, I've get 3+ years worth of credit card statements at home and I thought I'd been pretty careful about where I use my card. This is the second time I've had a card used fraudulently. About 4 years ago the card that I only used for business (so it was all hotels and restaurants paid for with me present, never on the Web), had two transactions for an online fishing gear shop in the US - total about $600. What can you do, apart from canceling all your credit cards?

Rant: Things That Don't WorkThat's all very well, but those you keep returning have to be dumped somewhere. Why not splash out on a good quality, long-lasting machine? Neil.
