  • Hourly Consultant and Health Insurance

Yep, in the US. I'm W2--but hourly. And I know this is expensive; since I'm hourly with this consultant company it's more expensive...I could've chose salary and it would've been less--but I didn't know my wife would be leaving her company to go back to school. :~

Sooo...I just switched consultant companies. I'm hourly now which is great, but this company is talking about over $700/mo. for health insurance for my wife and I. What are you other hourly's out there doing for insurance?

    N nullGumby

Every once in awhile someone will ask me to add something to their Access database they've been pouring macro code into for years... So then I have to debug through stuff like this: Public Function IsThere(what As Variant) As Boolean IsThere = Not NotThere(what) End Function Public Function NotThere(what As Variant) As Boolean If IsNull(what) Or Trim(what) = "" Or IsEmpty(what) Then NotThere = True Else NotThere = False End If End Function I mean wtf.

    N nullGumby

(Work-safe) I don't mind helping family out with their computers...although questions like "can you put the Internet on my computer?" bother me a little, and messages like "157 viruses found" make me want to vomit, it makes me really sad to see things like this[^]. This[^] is the other thing I LOVE seeing when working on someone's computer... :((

Finally! My buddy has come over to the dark side... He's taking a brake from all that nonsense of enhancing his career by studying Windows Presentation Foundation and WinFX (or whatever MS is calling it this week), and finally going to start playing WoW with me--I'm so proud. I'm starting a new character with him; we're going to name our characters Seesharpazar and Vebezilla. :-D ...bask in my witty nerd humor!

  • In Search Of A Good Query Tool
    N nullGumby

I'm trying to find a good query tool; something I can type SQL into, preferably with a Query-By-Example grid. I'm connecting to several database types including Teradata, DB2, Sybase, and SQL Server 2005 (all through ODBC). Currently I'm using MS Access 2003--I cannot believe this is the ultimate front-end query tool. Any recommendations?

Well, we're just getting started--there is no agreement. I'm W2 and currently seeing 42% of my billable, which I'm unhappy with (obviously). I just wanted to see--since we're negotiation still--what other people would expect in this position.

    N nullGumby

I received this e-mail yesterday from "eBay" and at first wrote it off as spam--looking through the headers though it looked like it might be real...so then I began to wonder about the plausibility of the content; does anyone know anything about this? Net Neutrality and the eBay Community: A Call to Action Dear [UserName], As you know, I almost never reach out to you personally with a request to get involved in a debate in the U.S. Congress. However, today I feel I must. Right now, the telephone and cable companies in control of Internet access are trying to use their enormous political muscle to dramatically change the Internet. It might be hard to believe, but lawmakers in Washington are seriously debating whether consumers should be free to use the Internet as they want in the future. Join me by clicking here -- [omitted] -- to send a message to your representatives in Congress. The phone and cable companies now control more than 95% of all Internet access. These large corporations are spending millions of dollars to promote legislation that would allow them to divide the Internet into a two-tiered system. The top tier would be a "Pay-to-Play" high-speed toll-road restricted to only the largest companies that can afford to pay high fees for preferential access to the Net. The bottom tier -- the slow lane -- would be what is left for everyone else. If the fast lane is the information "super-highway," the slow lane will operate more like a dirt road. ... -- modified at 9:25 Thursday 3rd August, 2006

A while ago a friend of mine working on another project enabled the NET SENDs so MSSQL Server could send him messages... Today, while working on the client machine through Terminal Services, all of a sudden he saw the pop-up: "you stupid pig" It was broadcast to the whole network...one of the users discovered the neat little NET SEND feature I guess. I LITERALLY ROTFL'd...
